    replacing LE85 - 2450 or 2451 ?

I want to replace my current LE85A by larger drivers, based on all the feedback that this could be a good improvement. I originally looked for 2440 or similar, but I can only find 2450 and 2451 at the moment, at reasonnable prices and close enought that I can check them before buying.

My current horns are good for 2" but not directly for 1.5", they would need some rework. Yet the 2451 are 'presented' as the best of the two. Anyone here with experience on both, is it worthwile paying more for the 2451?? I will use 2405 on tope anyway so ultimate extention is not really an issue. They'll have a low cut off of about 600Hz.

    Thanks for advice,

I can't really make an authoritative response, but here's my two cents. The advantage of the 2451 over the 2450 would be the absence of the old low-expansion rate throat and the consequent ability to use the "Optimized Aperture" horns that give the opportunity for better dispersion of the highs without special measures. If you are planning on using a horn that assumes the older throat pattern, the 2450 would suit just as well. Both of these drivers have a newer phase plug design that is offered as an improvement over the ones found in the 2440 generation of drivers, for extended highs. If you will be using the driver for treble frequencies on an older style horn and adding a UHF driver, I don't think it matters much whether you use a 2440, 2441, 2445, or 2450, except for the differences in diaphragms, which are, of course, interchangeable.

What is your experience of the actual hi freq performance of these drivers, I am a little concerned about the ragged response displayed on their tech datasheet, they don't look linear at all. Is it really possible to run these without a separate tweeter as some suggest?

Right now I have home made circular horns built to mate as closely as I could to the throat profile of the LE85A, I don't know how big the difference in pattern at the connection with a 245X would be.

    Thanks for your help!
