    Altec 902 Drivers

What is the difference between a 902-8A driver and a 902-8T?

    Thanks, Don

    From memory...

902T has loading cap for better protection at higher power.

Some folks remove the loading cap saying it improves the sound. If for lower power use I would agree.

I have never removed the loading caps from compression drivers as the frequencies I use them at are above what removing the loading caps would affect.

    Hope my memory is correct!

I also use 902's a bit and like them crossed over at 1khz or higher, 1.6khz is my preferred point.

For 800hz crossover point I use my Great Plains 399 (1.4" driver). They do better down to 800hz than the 902's!

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,Don,
The -8T's rear cap accommodates mounting a line xfmr (hence the "T") for distributed system use, the -8A doesn't. Other than that, given the same diaphragms, they're alike. Both accept 8 or 16 ohm 'frams, either aluminum or Pascalite, per application. 909s fall in the same category, being the same motor as 902s, and only varied in having loading caps, Pascalite original 'frams (and decals).

If you need a standard rear cover to convert an -8T, GPA sells them for around ten bucks (sans label).

Thanks guys for the infomation. I've got a pair of cornerhorn speakers that I used 511-b horns and 902-8A's for mid range. I'm getting ready to build a pair for a friend of mine who found a pair 902-8Ts on ebay. I just wanted to make sure they would perform as well as mine.

    Thanks, Don
