    Query

New kid on the block. I have the Altec Lansing 9849-8A Monitors and the horns are basically sitting at the bottom when the speakers are sitting up right. Question is: Is there a particular reason why the horn is located at the bottom rather then at the top while in proper arrangemet placement? Are should I just turn the speaker upside down which would place the horn at the top? Is there any benefit for one way or the other

    Hello Henry

They were probably set up to be sofit mounted so the horn would be on the bottom of the enclosure. No reason you couldn't turn them over.

HF horns are a line of sight type of affair... ideally the horns are at ear height or like the L300 are aimed at your expected ear height at the primary listening position.

I think I would flip them over and possibly tilt the cabs.

Thanks alot for the info! These horns surely can sing! Planning on hooking them up to my Mac c22 pre and Dynaco Stero 70. Right now I have them paired with my hk770amp/Nikko Beta 50IIpreamp. Is there any recommendation as to what would be a great synergistic match for these girls.

    I actually own:

McIntosh C22 and Dynaco tubed gear...

That would be MY preference with this system.

I believe that model has a pair of Altec 414's(12") with a 811B/806A horn/driver crossed over at 800hz.

These are mine Henry, 9849-8Ds, same internals with a nicer veneered cabinet.
You can have them right side up or upside down but you want the horn at about ear level in you standard listening position.
These are stacked on top of their bigger brothers the Model 15s and when both are singing the room is full of great Altec sound.

Thanks alot Gary! Placing mine on some floor stands which would allow the horn to be at ear level with the speaker turned up side down. I am now working on the synergistic amp/pre that will make these babies sing the way they were made to sing. Great speakers..........!
