L80T's - 035T tweeter gone

I have been given a pair of L80T's that have had a hard life, one tweeter gone, both woofers need re-foaming and the wood veneer needs some TLC. One tweeter is blown, I disassembled it and very carefully re-soldered the wire where it had broken. My worry is that is sounds very quite still, and its impedance only measures 1.8 ohms. I believe the coild has overheated in the past and has now shorted out. Since it seems irrepariable, I am looking for a good source for a replacement coild or diaphragh. Any ideas on the best place?

Sounds like you want to repair with a new assembly. Rebuild kits appear to be available. You need to confirm which type of 035Ti you have, whether it is the "A" model, as Zilch points out above. Prices have gone up on both kits. Might be suggesting that supply is diminishing. Either way replacement domes are going to be around $100-130 depending upon the model. Go to the www.jblpro.com site, under customer service, and explore the parts and service location threads. Alternatively, these units pop up on eBay regularly.

I have seen whole units go for less than indidual drivers. A month or so ago i was out and didn't get to bid some l80t3 that went for under $60

ther are some more "t" auction out there.

Sorry for all the Newbie questions, my first pair of JBL's and first rebuild of any speakers. Can anyone help me identify what kind of tweeter I have? It has 035ti spray painted on the rear, connectors or on opposite sides.

Having owned the L80t and several of its contemporaries, the original equipment tweeter was indeed the 035ti.
Model number and manufacture date should be painted/stencilled on the back of the magnet structure.
The later L-Series L80t3 used the 035tiA tweeter, as did the still later L-Series L7,L5,L3 and L1.

I am thinking the 035ti had the opposing lead connects, and the 035tiA had closer-spaced connects....at least that is what my L5's tech spec sheet shows.

I just wanted to post an update - The L80's are singing again... but I have a few questions. First the update; I managed to find a guy on ebay who was selling a set of L80T3's, but the cabinets were in a bad shape and he wanted $90 for shipping (which is probably realistic). I PM'd him to ask if I won, would he ship me just the drivers and the crossovers? o problems he said. So I managed to get all the drivers (2x 035ti, 2x Mid and 2x woofers) and corssovers for $100 shipped. I noticed the 035ti's I got from him had the connectors on the same side about 1" apart (newer 035's) whereas my older, broken one was 180' apart. The woofers were in great shape. I think I got a good deal, as just a replacement 035ti is well over this amount, and I got the whole set for less....

My questions are:-
1. The newer tweeters plugged right in and didn't need any cabinet work to make them fit, so am I correct in assuming they should be fine?
2. The crossover is completely different to the one in the cabinet. The current one looks handbuilt and all inductors have ferrites cores. The new crossovers are much neater, and on a proper PCB. Only a couple of the inductors have ferrite cores, the rest don't. From this is looks like the speakers underwent a re-design of the crossover. Should I change the crossover out for the newer one (I replaced all the units to be in the safe side, they are 5 years newer)?

Anyone interested in a 035ti, the mids and/or a couple of woofers that need re-foaming? Let me know...

The T3 crossover is generally regarded to be better. A bit more forgiving voicing (the L80T could be a bit bright on the highs, in some systems, while the T3 was a bit more even-handed). Also, air core inductors are usually "cleaner sounding" than ferrite cores, due to less saturation issues at high volumes.
