In a little over a week we will actually know what JBL has been cooking up.

Be?, Ti?, Kevlar?, Carbon Fiber?, obsidian?, who knows, but I doubt that it will be available in a black textured vinyl cabinet with lots of silver trim rings.

Here are the previous "Statement" speakers... it'll be in good company.

    Little Train or........

as a friends wife would say, "big ass speakers"? That would be as in "We aren't having any big ass speakers in the house".

I don't think those speakers on the train are for the average bear.

Johnny Cash: "I hear that train ah' comin', it's comin' around the bend..."

What a great time to be alive. I have often envied those that were alive to see the dawn of the Lansing Heritage. Now, I pity those same Great Names of the past that are no longer around to see the culmination of 60 years of advances laid upon their foundation.

    L400

The photo of the speaker on the train is 31 years old:

Nothing ever became of it ...

    Train of thought

Right. I think Widget was using it as a visual metaphor. I think the L400 is the Everest BTW.

The design went through a fairly extensive evolution before arriving at the final configuration. Originally, the concept was to develop a "super L300" with a similar sonic character. It was given the working designation of the L400

It wasn't meant to be literal... of course that was the catalog teaser photo of the consumer version of the 4343... it was killed by the bean counters. A few years later JBL found their audience in Japan and did introduce the Everest though.

JBL has never built their Statement speakers for the average bear. The select few who have bought JBL's Statement speakers would all appreciate this dated but still relevant quote from Alexis Badmaieff and Don Davis.

"You say you are not the compromising type. You have willingly paid the price (and borne the discomfort) of the 7-liter Ford GT Mark II that won at LeMans last year because performance is the most important single factor you consider. When you hunt you brace yourself to survive the blast of your Weatherby Mark V .387 Magnum. Anything smaller than your 8 X 10 Linhof is a miniature camera to you. Your Aero-Jet Commander shuttles you between your hand-built Norwegian motor sailor in Antigua and your Beacon Hill apartment in Boston where you record the live f-m stereo broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra on your Ampex MR-70. In short, you demand the very best..."

The new statement speaker will not fit in a small apartment and will likely cost more than an economy car... they are making a Statement. Finally!
