Cabinet / X-Over for Altec 3156 / 511 Horn

I have just bought a pair of Altec 3156 driver together with 511 Horn and 288 drivers for starting my first DIY project. Any recommendation for a cabinet (bassreflex or hornloaded) for housing the 3156 in this combination.

The 8156x cabinet was made for the 3156. There are plans for it in AN-12 on the CPC Productions website, however I just tried to go there and get you a link but they're offline. Maybe it's just temporary.

Unless you've got the very rare 1.4" throat 511E, your 511 won't work on a 288, (1" horn vs 1.4" driver).

The 3156 is a versatile woofer, but at 99dB, it won't keep up with a 288 (~115dB) unless you waste a big part of the 288s sensitivity to attenuation. Altec systems that used a single 3156 used small-format drivers on MR horns, with CD-equalised networks. Two 3156s were used with a single 288 in the A6, but that's not likely something you'd want in your LR. 288s can work on top of an A7 cab as in the A5 system, but the 3156 won't fare too well there.

IMO you need to do some component swapping.

Thanks for your advice. Just checked the drivers for the horn and I have the 808-8 and not the 288 as I wrote. I´m sorry for this mistake. Would this combination work in your view with the proposed enclosure ?

In response to your inquiry about the 511 horn.
Recommended was 802-8d and alternate 806-8A back in 1975.
The 808 should work equally as well since it's a later model of the 806-8A.

Symbiotic diaphragm model with 802D magnet structure. Electrically durable, but also has less transient response than 802. later 808s followed magnet development of 802.

There is something about Symbiotic QUOTE FROM ALTEC fAN AT ALTEC lANSING UNOFFICIAL."If you placed new aluminum and Pascalite diaphragms side-by-side I don't think you could tell them apart unless you peeked at the part number. The difference is that one (I don't remember which) is a slightly harder alloy. Symbiotik and Pascalite diaphragms came about as a result of the need for greater power handling. Symbiotik handled the power but lost high frequency response. Pascalite handles the power and has just about the same (some would say "the same") high frequency response as aluminum. Symbiotik disappeared after Pascalite became available".
