Has anyone tried slot loading woofers?

As in the Aquarius stuff, it supposedly improved the LF response.
I would think there would be drawbacks at Mid and Hi frequencies, that might be acceptable in the lower ranges say below 500 or 400 hz
As far as I can tell JBL in many woofers has traded efficiency for LF response via mass loading the woofer.
This would be an acoustic load as in a horn, without the bulk of a horn.
It seems as though JBL did much of the work on the Aquarius by ear as there were no design tools.
I am just trying to break out of the triangle of size/efficiency/frequency response that seems to limit potential.
Here is the writeup on Aquarius.

I am interested in perhaps persuing the concept as a DIY utilizing a 10 or twelve inch woofer to be named later( and purchased later)\
I would love to hear any Pros Cons insults or comments.

    Thanks

Effectively adds moving mass to the woofer. Lower mid-band efficiency (which can be good in a sub, less midrange "localization") but more output in the lowest registers.

I've done it, in many systems. My old car audio system had a infinite-baffle 15" in a slot-load, that had a measured rolloff point (f3) of 14 Hz in car. Would play 120dB measured, without audible distortion, at 20 Hz! No, it's not as loud as those crazy stereo contest cars, but it was BEYOND PLENTY of bass for a sane person!

Many home subs- the down-firing variety- use slot-loading. Definitely allows them to go lower...

    Regards,
    Gordon.

    Thanks Gordon

I guess if I am interested in pursuing that in a HIFI application I will need some time with an RTA.
