I love this bit from the manual which is at http://www.hparchive.com/hp_equipment.htm:

"Many of the components that may puzzle you, such as Q3 or CR8 or such as CR1, CR2, CR5, etc., are there to avoid turn on transients or avoid emitter base breakdown. Everything has a function, but invincible fatigue prevents me from going into all the gory details."

I vividly remember sitting there in the old HP labs watching my Dad and another engineer as they tried to get my home-made Barney Oliver amp to work. They really were puzzling over his schematic...and wondering what all those diodes were for.

I might post some pics of my project when I have time if I can figure out how or if some one can clue me in.

    Smile Barney oliver Audio Amplifier

    Hello,
I've been working at HP in Milan when I was much younger (1975-78) as a service engineer. I remember a sales manager having bought one of them.
I'm interested in buying one, also if it does not work or in bad conditions, I can fix it myself easily.
    My mail is: [email protected]

    Thank You
    Kind regards
    Mario

Bruce, I just found your post. I have a BO Amp that needs a good home. In good shape with complete manual except that one channels output transister is shot. You or anyone who can use it may have it just for paying shipping costs. Contact me at [email protected]

Thanks for all the interest. The Barney Oliver Amplifier has found a new home and is no longer available.

Red face looking to sell barney oliver amp

This is a very old thread, but I'm resurrecting it because we were shopping in a thrift store, and we found a Barney Oliver amplifier. If anyone is interested, please give me a private message. Thank you.

    i'm such a looser Heather,
    sorry for mis-understanding your post...

I had PMed the lady visiting LHS peddling the BO amplifier also...
I backed out when she started asking for bids....

she was selling Serial number 474....

back to my post, I have recieved BO Serial #196 from the seller in CA...
    all is well....

plugged them into a pair of *sparko-Altecs* (model 85 or something) just for some initial testing... unit sounds nice initially...

stepped attenuators are neat-o, never seen/used one before on an amplifier....
