    Question Recording studio Sub Woofer

Hello all you crazy ass JBL diy'ers!!

We're about to finish up our second music control room. And I need some advice building the sub woofer to my system. The room is only 25 sq. meters.
The reason for going the PA route is that I want extreme levels. When mixing bass heavy music like hip hop and dance, I need a system that can deliver up to 120db. Plus I get "dance floor" levels for reference.

    I haven't decided on the top system yet, but I think it'll be 2450SL + 2332 & one 2206H. Digital crossover.

There's some space restriction on the sub woofer size. Because it's going to be located under the console. 700m.m high, 800m.m wide and 1200m.m deep is maximum. Freq. resp. should be pretty flat from 30-120Hz. I will be sitting right in front of it as well....

    After surfin' around here I have found some interested designs;
    The Almighty 160kg monster
    Triple bandpass
Is there any other crazy boxes you could build? 2242H? 2226's??
Or should I just go ahead and buy the new 4645C and call it a day?.... but that ain't just as fun

If you wanna talk studio gear; I'm a moderator HERE
And if you wanna record your hit songs; I'll be at the STUDIO

    Thanks,
    Lindell

Yeah, but they ditched the fine Hidley monitors

in favour of an obscure British brand with the speaker frames on the wrong side

Hey, Lindell, I'm just kidding - see http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/s...ead.php?t=9131

Welcome from a fellow Swede! I've seen you over at Gearslutz, where I'm lurking from time to time.

    PS
I have no input on the subwoofer topic - sorry. A couple of 2231:s is enough for me.

That was THEM!? Oh my. That was a GREAT find!

It's worth noting: engineers all have a favorite monitor to use. It usually not the best available- but it's what they know and are comfortable using. I spent a little time in a recording studio and I learned what an Alesis brand monitor does right and does very wrong. It really is a terrible monitor compared to what is available. However- I'd be inclined to use them if I were to do any work because I know them. BUT, I'd never throw a pair of horns in the trash either!!!

Dunno what happened to the ones of Studio Bohus (mine are from Polar in Stockholm). Do you know, Lindell?

As to your comment on monitors: Sure! Remember there was a time when everybody was mixing on NS-10:s, and prior to that every control room had a pair of Auratones - all of which made/makes perfect sense (as long as there is a high-quality, full-range reference available, too!).

But now we're drifting away from the subwoofer topic - my bad.

I have no idea.... they prolly whent down the dumpster....

Studio Bohus was build in 1976 and designed by Tom Hidley. They had a Harrison console. Polar studios opened in 1978, built a "clone" of the Bohus control room using the same console and monitors....

Seems to me it will pound, but probably doesnt' have the VLF bass extension that a world-class recording studio should have.

Musically speaking these days, what with 5 and six string basses, and and synths that go down real low...wouldn't it make sense for your subs to reach down to 25Hz accurately?

Maybe you're mixing hip hop and rap that really just needs to pound loud and hard...but why would you want to limit your capabilities? I'd go with something more capable.

+1 on a 4645 or if you need a little more spl and have the room...look at a 4642a. I run a 4642a in my theater right now. Extremely clean sound even at wall buckling volumes and it has very good extension to boot. http://www.jblpro.com/pages/cinema/lfsub.htm

I also just bought a used 4688 sub which was linked to in Lindell's first post. I won't be taking delivery of the 4688 for a couple weeks though.
