Steve Schell's Cogent drivers in Japanese Stereo mag

A while ago Steve Schell was showing his Cogent horn loudspeaker drivers at CES (the Consumer Electronics Show) and caught the eye of a reporter from MJ Audio Technology magazine, one of the oldest, most respected hi-fi magazines in Japan.

These pictures appeared on page 21 of the march 2006 issue. Can't read Japanese, but I'm sure they were saying good things about them!

    Congrats Steve!

Thanks, Glen! It is exciting to see that. We achieved zero coverage in the U.S. print press, but it is nice to see that we got the mention in MJ. The MJ readership has a highly DIY orientation, and we hope to sell drivers into this market.

    Steve,

Can you translate that page? Do you know what they wrote?

    Hi TD,

No, I don't know what was said but I'm trying to find out. If I obtain a translation I will post it to the thread.

I'll look forward to it. Congrats on getting the coverage. That's a nice achievement in itself.

    Nice to see recognition!

For all the work you have done in this area of audio you deserve it!

My Japanese sister in law took a stab at translating the text of the MJ text. To her it looks something like:

California Cogent True-To-Life Loudspeakers makers big size complexion driver- DS 1448... DS-1428... direct a horn (put on) differ from German... real serious driver unique, joyful.

There were a few words she could not translate, probably technospeak.

I wrote to an acquaintance in Japan who works as a translator for a speaker company. He replied that he was rushing out on a vacation, but that the comments seem positive and he will provide a thorough translation when he returns in a few days.

    More translations

I sent the image of the MJ page out to a list of folks who (mostly) attended an annual DIY audio get-together this past weekend in Pennsylvania. Two very helpful replies so far contain these translations:

"The first half of the MJ caption just says that the large all-horn two-way system is made by Cogent of California. The low end is handled by the DS-1448 large format compression driver and the mid/high end by the DS-1428. After that, my Japanese gets too shaky, but I'll show the JPEG to someone on the office on Monday and figure out the rest. Something about attaching a rappa/lappa/rapper (??) to a direct radiator..."

"A 2-way all-horn system by Cogent True to Life
    Loudspeakers from California. A DS-1448 field-coil bass
compression driver with, on top, a mid-high range DS-1428
driver. Instead of a direct radiator made by some factory
in Germany with a different wrapper, I'm happy to say that
    these are genuine originals."

    Steve,
Congratulations to you and Rich on the mention in MJ!
This has to be the highest press honnor a driver manufacturer can achieve.
I am a little surprised the boot licks in the American press shut you out completely.
I guess you could take that as the complment it is.
    Well done to you both.

Press in US could be gotten, however it would cost a lot in bribes and the result might still be a snarky little hit piece that would reveal more about the reviewer than it would about the drivers.

My friend in Japan returned from his trip and provided this translation- likely the definitive one:

    "An all-horn two-way system built by California's Cogent True-to-Life
Loudspeakers. The horns are fitted with massive DS-1448 low frequency
and DS-1428 mid-to-high frequency compression drivers. Unlike the
products of a certain German manufacturer that mates horns to direct
radiators, we are happy to see some serious driver units for a change."
