There are two types of L91 lenes. One with velcro mounts and another with screw mounts. When was production switched?

Yes, the early ones were of thin wood that were screwed in place whereas the later ones were in plastic held with velcro.

I've no idea what year this changed, but my SM50 cabinets with an S7 load (LE15A, LE85-HL-91) had the wooden slats whereas the ones I got ~1982 (and still use) are plastic.

In reviewing library catalog pictures, it would -appear- that the older style
were used at least until 1969, and that by 1972, the plastic versions were
in use. I'm unable to resolve this question better than that... (and the pics are no
guarantee that the earlier model did not remain in use until stock ran out
    or ???) -grumpy

The screw mount lenes are also plastic. The 'fins' are white plasticthat are spray coated with black paint and the rectangular screw mount supports are painted transparent plastic. (Looks like lexan) The newer velcro lenes are made of a different materal, more light weight and more flexible. They are not painted but black plastic throughout. The older lenses also appear to be slightly larger and 'beefier.'

What I was keying in on was the alignment mechanism (molded into the later
series) for assembly. There may very well have been "older" style lenses made
from various materials as both JBLOG and toddalin have described... more
than I know. Are you restoring something or just curious? -grumpy

Just curious for now. The screw mount pair will be used for a 4345 project I'm working on. However in the future, I'd like to make a version out of wood. I stashed away a nice piece of rosewood.. earmarked for the project.
