I have a pair of these, but it's pretty obvious that they've been modified, presumably by their...
in that DIYAudio thread, that is!
Thanks for sharing it, though -- great photographs.
Doesn't look like a walk in the park, does it?
Yes, yes -- I know this is the "Lansing heritage forum"... and as the ever-pleased owner of a nice pair of Altec 604Es (and a 'fixer-upper' par of 604Bs and a smattering of other Altec & yes, even...
I am thoroughly pleased with them. They're intended for the "listening room" in our "retirement home" (currently in the planning stages) - but we had a window of opportunity to get the cabinets...
A belated (and not very good, sorry) photo of one of the Altec 604E Duplexes that now grace my living room.
Cabinets designed by Bill Fortier (http://www.wardsweb.org/Billfort/), built by...
This is also my understanding. The "A" flavor has its ports adjacent to the horn.

That's concrete advice! Thanks! :-)
I do appreciate the expertise... that's why I come here when the Altec/JBL goin' gets tough for me (which happens pretty quickly in my case).
Happy...
ah, light begins to dawn. The only difference to accommodate the woofers is a contour network on the woofer (the tweeter networks are derselben, the same)?
but the 413 contour network is "30905"...
Fair enough. I had seen the chart when I perused the site last week (although Earl has helped me here before and I certainly appreciate his reminder, since I didn't specifically say what research...
The box is sealed. The question is XO design for 411 vs. 413. I've got a pair of Valencias... ;-)

Ok, here's the deal. I have acquired a pair of Altec 878A Santiagos from a local hifi friend, who had in turn acquired them...
This is great; just the kind of stuff I sought. Thanks!
I guess the only intelligent question I can think of is what is the slope of this XO?
Thanks!
That's a helpful quantum of info, thanks. I was thinking about asking what might be a "more modern" version of this driver.
I am really a babe in the woods with JBL hardware; thus the...
OK, so I guess there was an 075, 175, 275, and 375. I know about the 075 of course, and I've read a little here and there on the 175 and 375... but there just doesn't seem to be much chatter on the...
ehhh... no, but for another data point, the 604Bs here have the grey baskets.
I can check the serial numbers, if that can help ID the year (I have no idea).
The 8B is just a wonderfully built and wonderful sounding amplifier, full stop. One I worked on (just a simple, and low-end rehabilitation for its owner) was absolutely the best sounding amplifier...
heh, the 511b horns arrived yesterday :-)
Now I have to get a little more serious about drivers for them.
I don't doubt that the Altec horns ring... but it doesn't have the sonic consequences (in my experience) that it does in, say, the cast metal MR horns on Klipsch Cornwalls.
I never knew Freddyi's last name!
The cabinet is a cross between a Karlson and a corner horn; interesting. I don't think it's a "genuine" Karlson... but I am no expert. Freddyi at AA is (if you want to consult one).
Here's a...
With a pair of 846A Valencias in the living room, I am pretty familiar with the 811 horns :-)
The 511, not so much. Thanks for the information.
...
What sort of drivers are typically/traditionally/best used with the Altec 511B horns? I realize that the three qualifiers I used may represent 3 different drivers :-)
I am (with luck) procuring a...
The woofer is an EV "Wolverine" LS-12A twincone/full-range (or the Allied morph thereof).
There could well have been an OEM labeled for JBL for all I know, though.
