Ribbon Tweeters
Has anyone here been trying these ribbon tweeters like
Raven, Eton, and the driver under the names "ESG, Aurum Cantus and so on" ?
I think i will settle with the Aurum Cantus G1 tweeter, this
should ne the same as the ESG, itīs made in china, and is
sold under several names.
You can se it here: http://www.aurumcantus.com/english/g2g3/g1/g1.htm
It is really outstanding, check this out: :)
Rated Power: 100W
Sensitivity: 102dB/W/M
Frequency range: 900Hz-40kHz
Recommended frequency cut: above 2000Hz
The width is 10,6 centimeters, exacly the same as the
side of the JBL 2123H, so i will use that JBL driver, one
ower and maybe one under the ribbon!!
I think it will be a KILLER!! :D

Ribbon Polar Response
The vertical polar response of the G1 ribbon (or any but the smallest of ribbons) is very narrow and changes a lot with increasing frequency. The G1 is down 15 dB at 15 kHz only 10 degrees off axis. This is far from flat power response. I will not use them for this reason.

you can easily say: "SWEETSPOT"
;) :D
but they are incredible i think, when you are in it!

The Esg is made by them but is different in the dampening of the rear chamber. The ESG1 sound fantastic, big open sound with no colorations. Big sweet spot too, no one here ever complained even when used with an open baffle 15" Biflex. I'm currently building a HMTM (horn bass, mid, tweeter, mid) with MGM theatre horns, two 2123J's and the ESg1. It will be quad-amped along with another nearfield MGM horn subwoofer. I expect it to be completed by the end of the week. It will have better snap and dynamics (as well as tone and imaging) over this current Biflex setup.

Exacly what Iīm doin, the 2123 is exacly the same witdth
as the ESG!!
:)
I guess you yse the 16ohm version due to the match of
sensitivity ? to the esg ? rather than 8ohm ?
-
I'm using two for lower distortion. I multiamp so sensitivity differences doesn't mean too much to me. My 40 watt 6C33C SET amps like the 8 ohm load two 16 ohm 2123J will provide in parallel.
The 2123's are wider than the ribbons.

Do you think the ribbon can be mounted in a small horn,
so they will behave better vertically ?
you have the same idea as me, two 2123 per side!!
:) :) :) :)

I think it would be a big mistake horn loading the ribbons or the 2123's. I built a radial and a tractrix (both 500 cycle) out of foam for the ribbons and they loaded ok on the bottom but it rolled off the treble. It really didn't sound good. Mine are at 40" from the floor to the center of the ribbon and no problem with standing up and enjoying. The 2123's are the same way, why screw up a good thing with a horn? Heck a pair is capable of like 130 db loaded in a box and is well over 100 db sensitive. I had a pair of 2123H in big 180 cycle tractrix horns and found it too colored for music reproduction. They also roll off at around 1k when horn loaded. It appears the new JBL 10" is better suited for a horn with its rising response rather than the nice linear response of the 2123's.

OK
how do you plan to mount the 2123? the ribbon in the
middle? How big volume inside for each 2123 ? do you
use sealed box for them? 3 liters ?
How low do you run the 2123, and what takes ower on the bottom frequencies?
i plan to use the 2202, maybe the 2234

I use a pair of the MGM Cerwin Vega theatre sub horns (remember Sensesurrond?) these will sit on top of them and a third in nearfield behind me. The MTM with the 2123's is looking like this. The ribbon will be mounted in the middle of course. These are 40" tall, 19" wide and will be finished with laquer over the walnut. The panels are filled with sand to cut down on cabinet coloration. I'm going to tune the seperate midbass enclosures to 110 cycles with slotted vents. This will be quad-amped. :D

GREAT!!
So what are the volume that you are useing the
2123 whith? 0,4 cu feet ? each..
What listeningdistance do you have then to the speakers..
Where do you buy the ESG ribbons

"Where do you buy the ESG ribbons"

yes offcourse, or from the Aurum Cantus, and the G1 tweeter wich is the same one. Or from musicaltransparency in Norway, also the same tweeter.
itīs a shame i do not have the money to buy a Raven 3.1, it
has lower distortion and ... everything should be better due
to the more calm/stable magnetic field in the gap.

SA tweeters
Theres a company called STAGE ACCOMPANY that makes nice sounding ribbons!
And with their horn flare the efficiency is high!
-
yes i know about the Stage Company driver also, it seems
better than the ESG in some ways actually.
Did you ckeck this studiomonitor www.griffinloudspeaker.com it
is designed by two swedish guys, it a studiomonitor with
RCF, SEAS and STAGE COMPANY -ribbon!!
It seems great.
