4411 or 4412 cabinet volume

Planning my next project, the long awaited creation of a pair of studio monitors for my home studio. In researching the cabinet volumes for the 4411 and 4412 it seems that JBL went with 1.6 cuft for each while 2.5 cu ft gives greater extention of response ( and is actually recommended in their enclosure guide ).

I understand that the 1.6 cu ft size was intended to fit in recording studios but would the 2.5cu ft volume be a better choice and a better alignment? Has anyone done the 128H 12 in a 2.5 cu ft box?

I have crossovers from 4411's. For drivers I have:

Woofers 128H
Mids LE 5-2 or 2105 or 104H
and 035Ti highs.

Could the 4411 crossover be used as is with the 5-2 /035Ti combination or a 104H / 035 Ti setup. I think the 2105 is too efficient for this application. I tried to acquire a pair of 044 but they are just too precious these days:(

I have cabinets slightly over 2.5 and the sound is full with good base definition. I have not heard the 128H in the smaller cabinets to compare. I would imagine that the small volume and different tuning would yield a more punchy mid bass, a little less on bass definition. The trade off is bigger box, a little more extension, flatter response 50-100 Hz. Smaller box, less extension, more mid bass punch. The 4411 crossover with my system is bass heavy and does not fit my room. Not to say you will have the same issues.

I would recommend the 2105 if you stick with the 4411 network. The efficiency difference is accounted for in the band pass design. I have not tried the 035 on this network..

If you go with the 104H (the poly cone mid, right?), I would try the 120Ti network. The 128H and 128H-1 are supposed to be very similar acoustically. I have used the 104H with the 035 and find this a good combination. Though different from the 044Ti, the 035 seems to be fairly close in specs.

Thanks DavidF, I found an obscure spec sheet on the 2105 which commented the 2105 as being a match for 5-9 accoustically so I will probably go with tht. The HP of the xover has additional components that I could bypass for testing to see if they were needed or not.


The 4412 network had 39 ohms in parallel with the woofer, something JBL does quite often, and a smaller inductor, witha lower crossover of 800 versus 1000 hz for the 4411. I prefer a network with a Zoebel, but the large choke in the 4411 circuit should properly damp the woofer.

The midrange circuits are radically different due to the more narrow spread between the low and high edges of the passband. In both cases a LC network is shunting the driver to tame rising HF output, the response graphs for teh drives show a rising high end above 5 Khz, in the 4411 an agressive L-pad resistor network reduces output significantly.

The High end networks crossover are close to each other but the 044 apparently needed a steeper 18db/oct slope and a Zoebel as well. The higher slope can stay but the Zoebel may soften the highs of the 035 too much. A-B testing will be the order of the day.

Overall I think it will be fun to try and make this work, I could just use the 4412 driver set and copy that xover but what fun would that be?
