Picked up a pair of 4560A cabinets loaded......
with the correct (2225H ) woofers and 2425H compression drivers mated to a 2470A horns (3110A crossovers). Apparently they spent their entire life inside a performing arts theatre in NYC, so the cabinets are in super nice condition. I haven't even listened to them yet , but I know that I'm going to want to experiment with different woofers for starters. Can the 2235 be horn loaded with good results in these cabs? I was also thinking of removing the horn and driver from inside of the cabinet and mounting it on the top for starters. I then have a pair of 2441s and 2350 horns that I'd like to try on top although I think that the 2350 horns are a bit too wide and will overhang the cabinet a couple of inches, so I probably won't like the look. I guess the next size down would be the 2345 horn, but I think that will only bolt up to the 2425 driver and not the 2441. Does anyone have a pair of 2345 horns that they would be willing to part with ? Also thought of trying a "Smith" horn on top, but once again, I don't currently own a pair. Suggestions anyone? thanks, Paul
Thanks for that info about the tuning.....
I got them fired up yesterday, and that was one of the first things that I noticed, that the lower bass was lacking a bit. I then removed the horn and driver from the cabinet and covered that opening with a piece of plywood. I then mounted the 2350 horn coupled to a 2440 driver on top and immediately noticed the improved bass response. I didn't have any test equipment with me ,so I can't report any real numbers at this time, but it definately sounded better to my ears. These cabinets have a second set of binding posts in the rear near the top, so I connected the high frequency leads from the 3110A crossover (previously connected to the 2425H ) to the back (inside) of the these binding posts. It was then , just a simple matter of running a short run of wire from these binding posts up to the 2440 on top, very easy! The allure of these cabinets to me is their effeciency. I have a few low powered (2 watts) single ended tube amps that I'm dying to try with these. I'll probably end up using the #45 tube amp on the compression driver and a more powerful tube amp on the woofer through an electronic crossover. Having a lot of fun so far! Thanks, Paul
I have a pair (actually two ) of the 2226J woofers (tent sale)
and I didn't know that they would play lower than the 2225H. Question, is it possible to "pad down" the 2226J (16 ohm) to give it the same DCR as the 8 ohm 2225 H so that I can continue to use the 3110A crossover? I also have a pair of Altec 515E woofers which I know will love being horn loaded due to their use in the VOTT. Just don't know how low they will go. Do you happen to know if the 2235 was ever used in a front horn? thanks, Paul
Just remembered that I also have a pair of LE-15A......
How would these do in the front loaded horn cabinet? Does anyone know what the volume is for this 4560A cabinet? It measures 36x 30x23 7/8 externally, but then you have to subtract the volume of the front horn. I'd really like to know this so that I can figure out the correct porting for each woofer that I plan on trying. Thanks again, Paul
