Nope, sorry, wrong basket. 130A/2220A no good for anything but 130A/2220A. Can't build a 2231 anymore anyway as the C8R2231 has been discontinued and replaced with the C8R2235. It's an improvement with a much better suspension.

So Giskard, you're saying that it's actually possible to recone a D130 as a 2235 and vice-versa? Man, that's kinda mind-blowing, in a sense... :)

opens up all sorts of possibilities for helping a friend of mine re-load a set of Viscount C36 cabinets... he has 077s, all he needs is to make a pair of D130s, and find a pair of N7000s...
Yeah, if I remember correctly the D140 is the one that may not work (gap may be too small). In any case, always check the gap before reconing. SOP.
So, if you were trying to duplicate an EARLY D130 (1948-1959?), then the D140 basket would be possibly more "appropriate"... but if you're trying to do a later D130 (ie, the Harvey Gerst-Dick Dale/D130F, and afterwards, version with the bigger gap), then don't use the D140?

From this and past discussions, I am to understand that a D130 can be reconed to a 2235H. If this is true, should the 51629 Mass Ring be installed?
What would the effect be of not having the SFG and flux stabilizing ring? Maybe best to get a real 3325H and use the D130 for something else (like a guitar speaker)?

Technically yes, always measure the gap first. Some very old drivers have gaps which are too small and will have to be sent to JBL for modification.

Yes.

Same as it's always been. You can read the advantages SFG ferrite and the flux stabilizing ring have over the older alnico baskets on JBL's website. ("Technical Notes Volume 1, Number 9 - Distortion and Power Compression in Low-Frequency Transducers")

Well, I personally prefer the advantages SFG ferrite structures offer but I'm not going to get into the alnico versus SFG ferrite debate again. Should someone use a 136A or 2231A as a guitar speaker because they have alnico assemblies instead of the 136H or 2231H SFG ferrite assemblies? What about the D130H? That's just an SFG ferrite version of the alnico D130...

Can't quibble with your answer. I do not have a particular bias toward the alnicos. My problem is that I have a D130 basket with a very poorly installed 140 (I think) cone. This was my original D130 from my C37 system that I built in 1955. When I went on to L100's, I let my son use the C37/D130 and he proceeded to blow the original (and probably many recones) with the aid of a rock group. You can tell that the cabinet was used standing on end, and is pretty badly scratched, but can be restored by re-veneering.
I want to restore at least the enclosure for purely sentimental reasons. I plan to use it by modifying it into a subwoofer (additional bracing, maybe internal layer of half inch ply), and I think it would be neat to use the D130 reconed to a 2235 for that purpose. More about this idea in a separate post, later.

Actually, given past experience with 2226s and 2225s, a 2225 (ie, the 2226 seems to have more midrange and the 2225 more bottom, ostensibly because of the improved magnet flux field in the 2226 increasing effective motor strength WRT the 2225), I would speculate that an E140 basket with a 2225 kit might sound MORE like a 2226 than the same kit in a 2225 basket... by the same mechanism.
I'm not taking bets here... just noting patterns from past experience, that lead to a likely explanation...
