Serial Number registry?
So I've heard a few times that JBL AND Altec records of serial numbers were lost (Altec in a fire, JBL in the Northridge earthquake)
Is there any interest in establishing a serial number registry on the Lansing Heritage site to reconstruct some of that information?
Maybe enough info could be accumulated to nail down some "landmark" dates that wouold be userful to members.
-
to me it sounds good

Good Idea
Might be interesting just to see how many units are still in tact and can be accounted for and what part of the country they are in now.
It would be best if the database was accessable by all so that one person did not have to be responsible to input the data. Not even sure if this is possible.
MB

For the database to be definitive, the date of manufacture would have to be known, which is what nobody knows.
The general "Vintage" for most products may be determined from the catalogs in the site library.
-
numerous items on Ebay
There are numerous items on ebay for sale, catalogs, brochure's etc; and etc;.
maybe we can have a separate donation to a chosen member to buy all this stuff on ebay,I'm sure there's alot of stuff out there we don't have? Eventually this stuff would have to be inserted into a spreadsheet somehow. There is never to much information too have. Let me know when you want my serial numbers.

suggestion how to post serial numbers

Well, I proceed undeterred.
If someone thinks it's pointless they don't need to participate,
but enough numbers could eventually generate some useful information.
If you're ever at a point where you have the serial numbers for your vintage system at hand please post them here.
Since we are trying to establish a correlation between serial numbers/model numbers/years of manufacture I would propose only two types of posting:
1. Speaker systems or parts that are accompanied by a dated receipt from the original dealer, or some other factory/dealer date (quality check slip, inspected by...). These would be as close as we'd get to a Gold Standard, of course they'll be exceptionally rare.
2. Speaker systems that include all their original parts, which would have been produced at the same time. Enough of these would eventually build up a picture of the progression of serial numbers/model numbers as products were introduced and discontinued over the years. Combining this info with known dates of short-lived models would give us some rough landmarks in the time line.
Other Suggestions:
Pictures add some info (material, shape and postion of the model number/serial number lable can be deciphered by some experts), but please don't make them too big.
Even if you include a picture in the post please write out the information in text. This will allow the posts to be searchable for the info.
As a search aid I would suggest a format like:
(model) "serial number" (the actual number)
examples:
olympus serial number 55555555 from 1963
LE85 serial number 5555555
So one could search specifically for "olympus serial number" making the high-lighted "hits" easier to spot in the thread.
I'll post a couple of my original (I believe) systems to the thread next week

I would love to get a key for deciphering the old serial # scheme used back in the 50's.

A database containing as much info as possible would also help if something was stolen.

Re.Serial numbers...does anyone at the factory or on here know if they were actually in numeric order...ie,if i have an 075 serial number 12456,does it litterally mean it was the 12456th unit to be produced? ....and if so,presumably someone somewhere has serial number 1 for every model?

I would like to see columns for the system components and their serial numbers as well.
Sounds like we need an editable/expandable table on the site.
Can we get a page, or a post that stays permanently editable?
In the meantime I would urge anyone to post here original speaker system or component serial numbers which they have been able to conclusively date,
or original systems containing multiple components/serial numbers that were made at the same time.
I did this for one of my systems:
http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/s...2&postcount=11
pictures of the lables are a help if you have them.

Serial Numbers
Hi Glen: Sorry for taking so long to reply to your request for my data. I don't have as much serial data as you might hope for. The only data I have accumulated is on the Sovereign and Olympus, and it's not that much. Over the years I have owned many Sovereign I/Sovereign II and Olympus/Apollo pairs and I have kept serial data on the systems and all of their components, and have included some data on other systems that I did not own. On these models there is definately a correlation between the cabinet serial numbers and the internal components and conclusions on date of manufacture/sale can be made. You are welcome to any data that I have. I can get it to you on an Excel Spreadsheet. Just let me know. Rick

Altec Lansing 838A Carmel
two numbers listed for each speaker
581 & 391305
578 & 391304
414Z driver serial# 391244
both woofers (in one enclosure) have the same serial number
I have not opened the other enclosure yet - I will edit this post this weekend.
http://www.audioheritage.org/photopo...cat=519&page=1
-
So many products produced by Altec have a number beginning with 391. As I understand it they were complying with the E.I.A. coding system for electronic industry manufacturers. The 391 identifies Altec as the manufacturer, and the 244 indicated that the product was made in the 24th week of a year ending in 4, likely 1964 for a 414Z.
The little bit I know about this comes from a useful page on the Weber VST site:
http://www.webervst.com/codes.html
Funny about the Carmel numbers though; you wouldn't think that they were made a year apart!

Hi Harvey,
Thanks for clearing that up. I thought it might be a JBL cabinet because I've heard that JBL employees were allowed to buy discounted units for their own use that were not always "branded" with the JBL logo. I have seen unlabeled JBL drive units (an LE8T in my L54 ad an LE15 with petrified Lansalloy) and was wondering if that story was true.
I'm not too disappointed that my cab is not JBL because it is very well built and finished, the folded horn mouth is even coated with a sort of black fiberglass like material that I thought might have been beyond a home-builders skills in the 1950s.
There are more pics of the cab and it's construction in the photo gallery:
http://www.audioheritage.org/photopo...500&ppuser=182
-
Unless it was a prototype, we (JBL employees) simply went to the stock room and picked up boxed, finished units. If it went out the door without a serial number, it was either on an invoice, or somebody had sticky fingers. Sticky fingers was not a common occurance in the Golden era of JBL; we really were a big family.
I often ate at Bill Thomas' house, sailed with Johnny Edwards over to Catalina, spent time with Ed and Edna May at their house, and shared a duplex with George Augspurger. I lived next door to Margaret Jackson for years before she became Margaret Thomas. We really were a family.
-
I think this is a great idea. Is it still happening? Am I to just submit the serial numbers from my cabinets and drivers along with my name?
:drive:
-
Hi Superbee,
I think it would be great if you post your serial numbers to the thread. Your name will be on the post. I am more interested in systems (groups of components made at the same time) and/or serial numbered items with dated receipts or some other solid way of determining their "birthday". Establishing the relationship of multiple serial numbered components could help create a sort of "Rosetta stone" establishing the timeline of large groups of components from a handful of dates.
Also Hofmannhp has been compiling a really great, more comprehensive, spreadsheet that will likely end up posted on the forum sometime in the future. Please send him a PM to add your info.

An ebay seller parting out Olympus with serial numbers 47923 and 47924 claimed that they were from 1966. The LX5 crossovers offered were serial numbers 12798 and 12804
Yours would presumably be a bit older than his.

4502 enclosures - 3420 Control Monitors
Here is the info on the two monitors I bought in Philly Feb 2006. The seller said he'd had them 13 years and bought them from his brother's friend - from NJ.
They are 2-way systems - but I am adding 2405 drivers to extended the frequency response and improve the sound.
There were no grills and nothing that said "Model 3420" but I gather thats what they are. The cabinets are plywood with walnut veneer. I didn't get the serial number of the horns (Model 2307), just the driver info.
======= box 1 ============
4502 Enclosure s/n 11275
3110 Crossover s/n 1478
2215 15" woofer s/n 2180
2420 MF driver s/n 1731
2405 HF driver s/n 62198 (new to unit)
======= box 2 ============
4502 Enclosure s/n 11165
3110 Crossover s/n 1326
2215 15" woofer s/n 1566
2420 MF driver s/n 2193
2405 HF driver s/n 61269 (new to unit)
========================
There are also a pair of plastic lenses that came with them,
2308 Lens s/n 10085
2308 Lens s/n 10582
They weren't mounted when I got them and I'm not sure if they're original
Once I get the slot tweeters installed and update the crossovers,
I hope to put them on top of the shelves where the L36s are now.
========================
I hope this helps the list .
Thanks for all the info you provide US!!
I would NEVER have dreamed of or even started such a project without all the legacy info on this site!

Hi Heather,
thanks for your data....the list grows ...
seems that the model is the 4325......the 4320 uses a crossover with 800hz, the 4325 uses 1khz. It maybe from the years 1970 to 1973......and YES, the lens 2308 (in this times named HL91) need to be mounted.
A wonderful speaker btw.

i'd love to know when my system was assembled. unfortunately i have no real knowledge of it's provenance other than i believe i acquired it in it's unusual original condition/configuration.
i have the serials from my 375's (see avatar for one of them) but would have to open the cabinets again to check the 150-4C numbers.
i suspect my system was built circa 1960.

375 no.1 - 2885
375 no.2 - 2053

150-4C - ????? unable to obtain at this time.
N400 no.1 - 1376
N400 no.2 - 1457
the system came with H5041 90 degree horns as the 375's were mounted in the mouth of the bass horn. no serials on those horns though.

A recent addition to the collection...
Metregon C45 Serial #457 (Dark Walnut?) (I am the 3rd owner)
Series 205 (that looks like it's new)
130A's (never been removed so no numbers)
275 (serial #539 one side (only) has been opened)
N600s (1422 & 1425) these have been bypassed with
N-800-Ds (which have no serial numbers, if so... I'm needing info on where the #'s are located)
Made in 1960 (just a guess but garnered from available paperwork from this forum. Thank You ;)

Hi Glen,
like me you are lurkin and fishing ebay for numbers....
this works very well and shows also some fraudly intensions of some scammers. See my thread in General.....
With more entries we know more about the systems and numbers.
So we can see that the Olympus start with 5 digits and 4xxxxx.....
well knowing that there were built about 2500.
Thanks

Makes sense..
I can say from experience that lugging around a pair of 375's is no easy feat, so it makes sense that the transporting of them from place to place in the factory would almost ensure that they were two at a time, one after another in series, unlike the other parts. Just a thought. S.G.

This wonderful piece is still in it's original packing with the original add-on weights and the original hardware still taped (by the manufacturer) to the styrofoam. This radiator was obtained by Delta sound in Worcester, MA. and it was packed by 78-3 at James B. Lansing Sound Inc. on June 8, 1972 as you can see in one of the photos.

ebay JBL C34 cabinets
Two JBL factory C34 cabinets with th early "cut corner" decals
****** NOTE ******
I made a mistake here, assuming that these were both JBL made cabinets because there were two pictures of the "Jim Lansing" decal on the front of the cabinet included in the ebay auction. Actually they were two different pictures of the same decal. Harvey Gerst was kind enough to enlighten me on the many details that differentiate between the JBL constructed cabinet on the right, and the apparently home-built copy on the left. Please have a look at Harvey's posts listing the details later in this thread.
I wish to be quite clear that the seller did not state that either of these cabinets were built in the JBL factory.
They were referred to as "JBL C34 Signature Rear Loaded Corner Speaker Pair" and "early set of "Jim Lansing" type speakers".
Even if one of the pair was not built in the factory it is still a very good execution of the Jim Lansing C34 cabinet design and most likely lives up to the seller's description.

Thanks Glen,
that's the stuff we need.
I look like a hawk, but had not seen this parts in ebay.
Hope that sometimes we can have additional contact to JBLers like Harvey Gerst of early times which can bring light in the dark with the numbering system.....which is very confusing.
BTW: for your info, I will again send you the spreadsheet, that is near 1000 entries limit.

Thanks for the encouragement HP.
I have more than 1000 serial numbers of miscellaneous components gathered from the internet. But without dates, or established relationships to other components they don't do much more than establish a bit of a range and tell a little bit about when the labels switched from one type to another.

For what it's worth, I recognize my left-handed writing of the serial numbers on those, so it's either one I put together, or systems I tested.

We used a roll-around cart to move stuff from the stock room to the system assembly area near the shipping doors. If the parts were put up on the stock room shelves in consecutive order, there was probably a 50-50 chance we'd grab consecutive numbers. It was never a priority to use consecutively numbered components. With a few exceptions, we didn't know what two cabinets (out of a run of cabinets) would be sold together as a stereo system.

Hi Harvey,
Thanks a lot for for your responses here, and catching this mistake in particular.
I called both cabinets factory because the auction included two pictures of the "JIM LANSING" decal on the front of the cabinet(s). Looking more closely I can see that there is two pictures of the same decal. One appearing "redder" than the other, I assumed they were two different decals. The left speaker's grille cloth didn't look right, but I thought it might have been replaced. But the wood grain around the decal is the same in both pictures, and the picture with the "less red" coloring shows the grill cloth of the right hand speaker, same decal in both.
I've asked the seller if both cabinets have decals.

The stain on the back of the home built job is way too light. The other tipoffs were the wire coloring; factory wiring would have been black/green for the woofer, and black/red for the HF driver. We would never have used all black lamp cord to wire the HF driver.
The grill spreader bar is also at the wrong point in the cabinet, and at a weird angle, indicating a home built job. We never used metal angle iron as grille speader bars. The spreader bar was wood, and looked like this from the side (kinda):
|\
|. \
|__|
Pictures 10, 12, and 22 also point out more differences; no T-nuts on the woofer in the home-built job, the 175 outside holes are not even, the N1200 network cutout was hand-cut, not jig-routed, and the wiring holes from the network are spaced wrong and not jig-drilled.

Thanks again Harvey!
The detail of your knowledge is great!
I am always surprised by the quality of these homebuilt cabinets, they are often quite well made and match very closely the construction of the factory cabinets even to the internal bracing (I gues from following JBL plans).
It's really nice that you can gives us a handle on the details that would distinguish a well built copy from a JBL original.
Thanks for your invaluable input!

The plans we sold to customers were quite accurate and would result in a perfect cabinet - if they used the lockmitered joints we used (most often they didn't - a dead giveaway at an exposed back edge). The dark mahogany stain would also be difficult to duplicate, as would the stain on the back panels and inside pieces.

Early "date-code" serial numbers on D130 drivers
Quoting Steve Schell from a different thread:
[quote Steve Schell]I have noticed the odd serial numbers on all of the early (pre late 1950s) JBL products. I asked John Edwards, who ran the office for Jim Lansing from the Venice days onward and typed most of the "cut corner" type labels, about this. He said that the "serial" number actually represented some sort of batch number and possibly dating scheme, though he couldn't remember the details.
The serial numbers seem to make more sense after they began using the oval metal ID plates. Maybe they used a more normal scheme from that point on.[quote]
And I think it was Steve Schell who guessed that the first three numbers represent the year and month of origin (shipping date) in the format:
YMMxx (for 5 digit numbers)
YMMxxx (for 6 digit numbers)
Y being the last digit of the year as in "1" representing 1951
MM being the two digit month as in 06 representing June.
(I haven't yet found an early serial number starting with "2")
This fits well with the range of the early component serial numbers I have been able to find in that the first digit has a range of 1-6 (1951 to 1956) and the second and third numbers range from 01-12 conforming to twelve months.
And on the few original systems that I have found with components assembled at the same time and using these type of serial numbers the system components did have the same first three numbers.
Some support for this date interpretation is also found in serial numbers for the D-130-E, one of the shortest production runs during the "date-code" era. The E designated a field coil driver that was produced in anticipation of a possible alnico shortage because of the Korean war.
See an LH article on this driver here:
http://audioheritage.org/html/readers-photos/d130e.htm
As far as I can tell the D-130E was only ever listed for sale on JBL's August 1951 price list.
The second and third labels pictured below are from D-130Es and the first three numbers "106" would be interpreted as a June, 1951 production date which would seem to corrrelate well with their August 1951 appearance on the price list. The pair of matching serial numbers point to a single production run.
Other identical serial numbers have been found, a couple of N1200s I will post pictures of later, and some pairs of 130Bs removed from cabinets that were originally equipped with a pair of woofers which naturally enough would have been made and shipped at the same time.
But I'm not so sure that the remaining digits following the first three represent a "production batch" because in some cases the "number suffix" doesn't change for units that were shipped over a span of a couple of years:
175: N_30474, 40374, N-41074, N-41174, No50274
(from April, 1953 to Feb, 1955)
1217-1290: 404153, 410153, 502-153
(from April, 1954 to Feb, 1955)
N1200: 404170, 406170, 502170, 603170
(from April, 1954 to March, 1956)
130A & 130B: 405169, 412169, 505169, 601169
(from May, 1954 to Jan, 1956)
But in other cases the numbers increment up faster than might be expected for production runs:
The D130 "suffix numbers" increased from 169 in July, 1954 (407169)
to 511 by Oct, 1955 (510511) an increase of 342
to 713 by Aug, 1956 (608713) an increase of 202
150-4 "suffix numbers" increased from 342 and 347 in Nov, 1953 (311-342 & 311-347)
to 711 in Nov. 1954 (411-711) an increase of 364
to 825 in Feb, 1955 (502-825) an increase of 114
This shows an almost daily incrementing up of the numbers on D130s and 150-4s while other components were not incrementing up at all, or only occasionally
Anyway, here are some pics of these "early labels" that might help get this sorted out.
Some early D130 serial numbers:
D-130 serial number 5010 *
D-130-E serial number 10613
D-130-E serial number 10613
D-130 serial number 10615
D-130 serial number 407169
D-130 serial number 510511
D-130 serial number 608713
*note that the 5010 label does not show JBL name or address, and is probably not part of the "date-code" nubering scheme, there was also an intermediate "cut-corners" label that displayed the "James B. Lansing Sound" name without the address.

Early serial numbers on N-1000 crossovers
Actually most N-1000 crossovers that I'm aware of don't have serial numbers on them!
The earliest had only a square "Lansing Signature" logo, not even a model number. Which was in a system that also had only a logo with no serial number.
The next earliest N-1000 I have seen had a label with the "James B.Lansing Sound" tag, but the serial number space was left blank.
This is the first picture shown below.
In my own D-1002 speaker system with serial number 1049 the internal components have similar label that omit the serial number. So it may be that JBL didn't bother to assign serial numbers to components that were installed in one of their speaker units, at least at this time.
The latest N-1000 crossover I've seen bears serial number 499, it's the second picture below. It matches the serial number of the D-175 driver (also shown) that it was paired with in the D-1004 system (serial number 1142) they came out of.
It makes sense that the driver and crossover serial numbers would match at this early period. When these guys were built they were the only hi-frequency driver and crossover that JBL made.

175 serial number N 30474

175 serial number N-41074
175 serial number N-41174
175 serial number No50274
*This 175-34 model is the only one I've seen hyphenated in this way.
Anyone know why it might have gotten the extra "-34"?
-
Hi Glen,
You have done some great work here! Please keep it up.
I don't think I can claim credit for decoding the nembering scheme, but your hypothesis makes sense to me. Of course there are always flies in the ointment, like that no-name, no-address label.
I believe the cut corner labels began in Van Nuys, the earliest being the n-n,n-a. These were the company's first attempt to identify the components with model and serial numbers. As You'll recall, My Venice era D-1000 system has the same "A Jim Lansing Signature Speaker" paper label applied to all components, even the enclosure. Then came the one with the company name but no address. The drivers at this time also had a decal (probably the "racetrack") that showed the location as Van Nuys. After the move to Fletcher Drive, new cut corner labels that say Los Angeles were used. This may have coincided with the debut of Alvin Lustig's big L Jim Lansing decal, and the retirement of the racetrack and other location-identifying decals.
I doubt if the labels can positively identify the location of manufacture in all cases. I have seen Fletcher Drive era systems with Van Nuys labels on some drivers, so either driver inventory was moved or they used existing labels until they ran out.

**this and another D-130-A shared a D-1004 cabinet with the a D-175 and N-1000 that were both numbered 499. Could this "name only" tag be a very early 4-digit "date-code" number? Or is it a different, earlier scheme?

That's great info Harvey, thanks for weighing in.
Do you know if Miller would also have made the earlier engraved plastic nameplates used on the 175 and 375 drivers before those used foilcals?

Hi Glen and Harvey,
that's great....thread is going to the right direction..:)
Miller moved from Casitas to some 10mls east,....El Monte , Temple City Blvd.
Maybe that they have also a "Harvey Gerst" :D who can remember the old times.

I found the 175-34 shown in only one place, the January 1954 Theatre Sound Systems price list (a 275-34 was also listed)
This would seem to agree with the interpretation of the "date-code" serial number of the 175-34 giving a March, 1954 build date.
Does anyone know what the difference was between the regular 175 & 275 and these "-34" versions? Were these early designations of the later "HP" versions with the more rugged phenolic diaphrams?

Oldmics assumes that they changed the system in 1955/56 for 5 digit or 4 digits without any systematic.....maybe they only count up from this date.

The types with the -34 , as one example confirms were built in the C34

Hi Harvey,
Since you weren't 100% sure, and I was striking out at Miller Dial, I did a little investigation and found that a company named Nelson Nameplate was located at 3191 Casitas Ave, just down the block from JBL and thought they might've done some of the nameplate work too, possibly including the engraved plastic versions that came and went.
Here's their webpage with a brief history of the company:
http://www.nelsonusa.com/about/
With the kind help of John Beilfuss I received this forwarded email from Ed Simpson who worked at Nelson Nameplate as a salesman in the 50s and worked his way up to become president of the company by the time he retired:
JB,
We moved into 3191 after the fire in 1955. JBL was already there as I recall.
It was a couple of years later that an engineer from JBL came down to visit us. I took him through the plant and looked at some of the work he wanted done. I believe, in those days it was etch work and he also had some small screened or lithographed panels.
We did a quotation for him and a copy to purchasing which was a lady but her name escapes me. They were a big Miller Dial account at that time.
We did get some business and things were going well, they could come down and design parts and we made them quickly.
This all came unglued when the Purchasing Manager whose first name was Red and again the last name escapes me took the business away from us and retooled Miller.
The whole thing only lasted about a year. It is interesting to know that the Purchasing Manager later was let go and went to work for Miller Dial in the same capacity.
There would be no records from any early dealings with JBL that I know of.

Thanks Glen for your work to find out more about the serial numbering system, but I cannot imagine that the foilcal company does the punched or printed numbers. i guess they made the naked decals and the Northridge guys made the number.
Anyway....the Registartion counter is now on 1068

OK, Nelson Nameplate sounds right. (Damn, it's hell getting old; your memory is the second thing to go.) If you faced the front door on Casitas, Nelson was to the right. I thought Nelson was already there when we moved into Casitas from Fletcher Drive.
I guess we used Miller Dial when I was at Acoustic Control and I got them confused.

You're not confused!
Most of JBLs business was with Miller Dial.
It sounds like Nelson got a share of the business for a few years from the mid-late 50s to through the early 1960s, including some of the aluminum nameplates. Ed Simpson recognized the attached images as some of the type of work Nelson Nameplate did for JBL:
They are the same type of foilcal parts that we took from Miller Dial. Foilcal was their name for products made of aluminum under .006 in thickness.
They also had worked on tooling up for some prototype equipment when they had to return the tooling and artwork to JBL who was moving all their business to Miller Dial:
We also worked on products not shown in your lineup that were prototypes that JBL tooled for thousands of dollars. Those tools were later pulled from Nelson and the artwork was also given to JBL to be given to Miller.
Ed recalled the puchasing manager that apparently made the decision:
I remember his name as Red Houghton.
Does that name ring any bells?

Nope, no bells. Arnold Kalland (?sp) was head of purchasing during those days, as I recall.
