You have a Guitar Center nearby? Go there and look in their Pro Audio department....

You may consider buying a entry level table with cart. This is a very nice table with cart for $200.00 you can buy it cheaper if you shop it.

Superbee have you or your friend checked out Audiogon.com? Along with some very highend/high priced tables I'v seen some bargain basement tables for under $200 on Audiogon.

NO, NO, NO. Please don't consider the Stanton with the straight arm. That's just for DJs who want to play backwards as often as they play forwards. Terrible tracking error.

All of those that I have seen are made from thin plastic shells, hollow inside and they weigh about two pounds. Here's a test that I do. I lift the dust cover and press down on the edge of the platter. If there is no resistance to the pressure and the platter just bends down independent of the tonearm, it failed the test. My technical term for this is plastic junk. But most of them are still better that the straight arm Stanton. Another minimum standard that I would apply is that you will want a decent elliptical stylus. If it comes with a conical, like many of those DJ tables, then that's something that you need to upgrade right away, and it's better to just get a decent one in the first place. If you are looking for a low cost turntable, I seem to be up to my elbows in them right now. I tend to aquire them at estate sales, when they want me to take a whole system instead of cherry picking the good parts. You have the advantage of being pretty close to me. Send a PM.

The NAD for $45 isn't a bad deal/table for a "budget" situation, probably it's much better than one of those new DJ tables. Superbee you might want to advise your friend to make sure the cartridge is in good shape or he will end up damaging his records. Again I suggest Audiogon for a "budget" cartridge, seen a number of decent cartridges that were offered for $100 or less that would greatly improve the performance of the NAD table. A lot of these cartridges are like new and have very low hours if any.

A few years back, I would pick up used lowend TTs at garage sales for $5-10 (nothing really audiophile quality). Still have a few in my storage - you want me 2 dig one out? Operating conditions unknown, but the price is right (cost + shipping)!
