Hey all,

I picked up a pair of Barons (little brother to the harkness), and I was wondering what options were available for this model. I know you could get D123 or D130, right? Were D130s only available on the signature models? Other than tawney walnut, were there any other options? The library has limited info on this model... Thanks!

BTW, I'm continually amazed at how decent the sound is for a pair of speakers this old and simple....Those JBL engineers musta really loved what they did. It shows.

From the 1957 catalog:

The C38 Baron enclosure could take systems 001 (D130A, 175DLH, N1200), 002 (D123, 075, N2500), 020 (D216, 075, N2600), 030 (D130, 075, N2500) or single speaker units D208, D216, D123, D131, or D130 and was available in contemporary wood finishes (light or dark mahogany, natural birch, blond korina or ebony finished hardwood) and premium wood finishes(salem maple, light oak, light or dark walnut).

Thank you so much, Glen. I wasn't going back in the catalogs far enough (date= 1950's). I guess I got an 030 (D130, 075, N2500). I can't tell what kind of veneer I have, though. It looks like walnut, but if it is- it's one of the most beautifully grained pieces I've seen.

I know the Baron is nothing that special, but when I play electric guitar stuff through them- the thing voices like a fine Fender guitar amp (compliment of the D130), but way better (075). Guitar guys should really hear a pair of older JBL speakers loaded with D130 or D123. I put Jimi Hendrix- Blues, and Clapton's- From the Cradle on last night (both Fender dudes). You couldn't beat the smile of my face. Fun little speakers! They also make great end tables!:p

I think I'll pick up some C31, C39, C34 type stuff and fill the downstairs living room with oldschool vibe. This is an addictive hobby! :bouncy:
