View Full Version : So. CA Lansing Heritage Dinner

Don McRitchie

Since the Lansing Heritage Weekend has been deferred for the time being, would anyone in the LA area be interested in getting together for a Lansing Heritage dinner during the week of March 12-18? I'm in town that week to meet with JBL staff at Northridge. I'm thinking of just an informal gathering at a local restaurant as an opportunity for a meet-up.

Anybody driving out from eastwise here?

Hmmm, I'd be willing to trade Quadrex grilles* for expenses and a little $$ too if needed.

JBL museum might like some* too!

It looks like the 14th is open for most people so I would suggest this date. I am open to any suggested venue. I will be staying with Steve Schell in Long Beach but will be able to travel in the general LA area. Currently, I am not scheduled to be at Northridge that day so there is no advantage to me in meeting in that vicinity unless it is convenient for everyone else. I will be leaving for LA on the 11th but I will have access to this board while I am there.

There are many nice places in Long Beach itself, as well as the surrounding areas.

Some questions will help identify an appropriate venue.

Is a private room or semi-private room needed?
Is anyplace with dinner prices under $25 okay?
What about sashimi and sushi (plus many available cooked foods like fish, lobster, crab legs, Teriyaki beef, and chicken, etc.) as an option?
Or all meat all the time (like a Brazilian BBQ eat all the meat you can place)?
Or a waterfront venue with fresh seafood and traditional American foods?
What's the general time frame?

If we get a consensus, I can easily make reservations at a number of nice places.

BTW Don, your Canadian money's no good around here , so we'll be picking up your tab.

I like that little hole in the wall restaurant on the west side of PCH across from the Red Onion/Sams near the water tower home in the Seal Beach/ Huntington Harbour area. Don't remember the name though.

Shoreline Village has nice places. I'm open but prefer my food cooked.:p Money is not an issue.

:idea:Hey, is the Pegasus still around? :moon:

For myself, I would prefer later, 7:00 or 7:30, to allow more time to negotiate the rush hour traffic. I would probably run late for a 6:00 dinner.
But, whatever is decided, I'll be coming.

This is the one I remember:

Taco Surf Incorporated

16821 Pacific Coast Hwy
Surfside, CA 90743 http://a300.g.akamaitech.net/7/300/33/32b727f8562337/images.citysearch.com/sys/com/buttons/view_map_yellow.gif (http://maps.citysearch.com/location/208860?)
(562) 592-2290

6:00 P.M is early for LA time as traffic is heavy and people are trying to get home from work. 7:00 P.M. would probably work better for most involved.

7:00 p.m., Tues nite, Taco Surf, I'll be there.

I'm easy to spot, I'll be wearing a sweat-shirt and Levis. :D

Parking at night is sometimes a pain at that place, I usually park across PCH, caddi-corner from the traffic light at Peter's Landing, then walk across PCH. The resturant is almost directly under that monster water tower.

Info on the Water Tower home. As I recall, when it was for sale, it was listed at about 1,200 sq ft and in the 4 million $$$ range.

Yes, it was good to meet so many members in the flesh and see the men behind the monikers.

We had a number of two- three- and four-way conversations, and at the end talked briefly about the possible LH Weekend for late spring/early summer. Hopefully, there'll be more info about that soon.

I have a big meeting with about 160 school administrators this morning, so I have to run, but I'll post some pictures later, including one of the next generation of LH members, who kept hanging around near the end of the table. Maybe Don will have his pictures up before long. EDIT: There's one now!

Unfortunately, the picture I had of the future LH member didn't turn out well. It was a very young man who kept playing around near the end of our table, almost out of his parents' control, pulling things off the wall, hanging on the beaded curtains, picking stuff up off the floor, dancing around, etc.

I kept thinking, This kid is one of us.

-----------------------------------------------

Most of the discussion revolved around the typical driver, vintage speaker, electronic topics. Bart even brought in a 12" woofer with a unique flex characteristic. While unusual flexibility might be attractive in a woman, it looked really odd in a driver.

I managed to get confessions from virtually everyone that they'd never heard L7s, only Don had heard SVA2100s, a couple had heard the XPL200s, and maybe one (Don?) had heard the Performance Series. Several had not heard 4430s, either. So, there's some serious catching up to do.

This renews my drive to get the LH Weekend planned for late spring/early summer, and with some good suggestions and some help from Don and Bart, we may be able to announce something soon.

---------------------------------

One last note: all the way home I kept repeating over and over "Lip my stocking. Lip my stocking!" from Lost In Translation.

Premium Fantasy woman: Mr. Kazu sent me, premium fantasy. My stockings. Rip them. [sounds like "lip them"]
Premium Fantasy woman: Rip my stockings. Yes, please, rip them.
Bob: What?
Premium Fantasy woman: Rip them. HEY! Rip my stocking!
Bob: Hey? Lip them? Lip them? What?
[rolling around on the floor, waving her legs in the air]
Premium Fantasy woman: Oh Mr. Harris! Don't touch me! Mr. Bob Harris! Just rip my stocking!

:wtf: What was that all about?

But, alas, it's not your eye. :(

Get "edge" to grab a photo of the real ones - they are much prettier! ;)

Here ya go, Bo...you ladies man, you. I'm the lucky one that gets to see these up close and in person....everyday :) .

No beer for me. Long Island Iced Teas all the way.

As to the food, I had indigestion and gas for 24 hours afterward, so I guess it was good Mexican food. I had the pescado vercruz, which was one of the healthy fish choices. ;) I had her serve it up caliente! :flamed: So it tasted good going down, and I got to enjoy the aftertaste for hours.

Well well.... Some of us can handle different food better that others.;) This is NOT a joke, as I know what can happen.:rockon2: Hope you are ok now TI, and others if you got the OTV (Often Toilet Visit):)

Anyway, again it is so nice to to see picks of somebody we might meet in person later....in a LH meeting...or in another occasion. (Hope that was the right way to say it)

Seriously, it was only about that delightful climb back up your throat that some so-called Mexican food does for hours after you eat it. :barf:

All I can do is report it; what others do with it is up to them. :p

And we were all ready to go to Taco Surf to bask in the after-glow of the LH dinner meet. Somehow, something tells me it's not a glow. :p

I had some up in Watts today for lunch. Jumpin' Jehosephat, there'll be some grease floating tonight.

All thoughts of the Taco Surf cuisine are fading away, but the camaraderie shall live on!

Long live the Taco Surf Ten!

You know, I had no trouble digesting the fish tacos, however I could have done just as well without the 3rd Apple Martini. :)
