Any recommendations for medium sized (definately not nearfield!) monitors in the $200-$500 range. I like the idea of 4311's but I don't know if they would be the best choice. I have some reasonably flat nearfields, I need some bigger speakers for tracking the "bed" stuff and for impressive playback.

Can you spec out "medium" for us.

Some guys here think 4430s are "medium." Some think 120Tis are medium. Some think 4406s are medium.

IMHO, 4410, 4411, 4412. :)

I like BIG speakers but the 4412's really impress me for a little speaker. :bouncy:

4411 will do the job, the 4312 might be easier to find but I would use a monitor with the 128H woofer, they are tough to beat

Medium being one large woofer per cabinet, ie. one 10, 12, or 15

thanks, keep 'em coming

does 4412 denote a 12 inch woofer?

the 4411 had a 128H 12 inch woofer as well.

So, why do the 4311's seem to be more poplular, and expensive than the 4411/4412?

Also, how much power does a 4412 or 4311 need to run properly. I have a crown d75, an EV 200 watt per channel fanless amp, a 40 watt mono bogen tube amp (6L6's), an Aiwa reciever/amp, and a JVC reciever/amp. Will any of these do them justice?

The 4412 is pretty efficient at (IIRC) 91dB/watt at 1m. The 4411 is a little less at (IIRC) 90dB. So a 40 watt tube or well made receiver can fill a medium sized room with adequate volume.:)

http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/images/smilies/applaud.gif Yep, the 4412s do it for me, they are the classic "sorted" 12" three way. The 128H-1 is a great driver as is the 104H-2 mid and the 035Ti is consistant and reliable, good crossover too. A package that works well. My 2 pence!

Use the Crown or EV. Throw the Aiwa on the curb. The JVC could be one of their rare pieces that actually reproduce music. If you like your JBL's, throw the Aiwa on the curb before you clip out a tweeter... or worse :) Not busting chops, just giving fair warning.

Thanks for the info, I figured on using the crown, but didn't know if it was enough juice. I'm also checking into some L-166's locally, they seem to be comparable to the 4311/4412 club. Lots of folks on the forum seem to like them too. I'm at least gonna give 'em a listen.

Hi,

I have heard almost all of the 43xx series, from the 4311's to the 4350's. I own a pair of 4343's (4-way). I love my 4343's, but I use them more in a critical listening enviroment. They are the most difficult of the 43xx's to properly balance. However, if you get them right, it's well worth it.

However, for studio use, I would recommend a pair of 4333's. They are 3-way, 15" LF, 1" Horn, and a Slot Tweeter. They are very smooth, easier to balance, and will give you the deep bass that I think you're looking for. They can handle incredible amounts of power too. A friend of mine owns a pair that he's running Bi-Amped with Crown Macro-Reference Amps. Punchy, yet smooth, with a crisp top end. I think you'll like them a lot.

I like the 4311's, they serve their purpose. But the 12" LF will limit you in certain applications.

Hope this helps,
Craig

Hello Again,

When I responded to your post, I failed to see the $200-$500 part. The 4333's are definitely not that. In that case I would recommend a set of 4311's, or maybe a set of L-65 Jubals.

However, if it's possible to get some more $$$ together, the 4333's ARE well worth their price.

/Craig

L-65 Jubal? :banghead:

I'll post it again:

You MIGHT be able to score a pair of 4425's at the high end of your budget.

For "Impressive playback," it'd be 4430's....

I just hooked up the L-166's I bought last night. I think they're gonna be great for what I wanted. They have very detailed, full range sound. I tried them with the crown d75 amp and they were good, but when I put them on the EV 7200, they were great!

Congratulations wookie. The classic L166s have several fans here, some think they belong to the best balanced 3-ways ever made by JBL. I own a pair too, and adore the 066s for HF especially, but they provide pretty deep bass also. And yes they can stand the comparison to the 4311/4312s effortless, to the 4412s – others will be able to tell. (http://misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=privatemessage#)

Thanks for all the advice, from this thread, and especially all the info I got by searching this forum. Before I did that search, I had never even heard of several models (like the L-166) that I checked into.

I was surprised how much difference the amp made, compared to the EV, the crown just sounded anemic.

BTW, does horizontal placement affect the balance of these speakers?

I tried both, but they were in such different spots in the room, that I think that had more to do with what little difference I heard than whether they were vertical or horizontal.

It's like selecting a good shoe (Speakers) for walking. All feets (Amps) are different, and they got to match.

Yes....a lot.

Wish you many happy listening hours!http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/images/smilies/smile.gif

I have had a pair of 4311's for about 15 years. They have needed the 12's reconed/replaced for a loooong time. SInce I am used to them, I just have to adjust my way of listening. The foam is in need of replacement as well.
So - recone or new speakers??? The poll is now open!

Definitely recone/restore. The parts are available, and there's no better value than maintaining your vintage JBL studio monitor

Love your avatar. I wanna Les Paul Standard Gold top to go with my black Les Paul Custom.
