Do you have any recommendations for JBLs that are not in the L100/L65/4311 kind of collector frenzy realm? I'm looking for some nice classic floor standing JBLs.

Well how far back do you want to go?? From the 80's you have L100t3 which are nice. You can usually get them for a reasonable price.

In addition to the L100T3 (and L100T), the L80T3s are going pretty cheap lately on eBay.:)

Far back enough to get real wood veneer. 60's/70's I'm open, just don't want any stamped metal baskets or vinyl veneer.

Ditto-Ditto-Ditto on the L100T's! There is no better JBL - Ebay deal out there. $200 - $500 depending on condition. The wood veneer, unfortunately, is a poor grade. However, they will blow away the L100's, L65's and 4311's.

Lancer 99's are pretty decent.

I have to second (or third, fourth) the L100t3 recomendation. They are a killer deal.

They have a nice bottom and the tweeter is one of the best sounding domes JBL made IMHO.There are a couple of threads about bypassing and charge coupling the networks if you are the DIY tweeker type.

They can always be re-veneered in the exotic wood of your choice.

If you want nice veneer and are willing to go back a bit further in sound technology,
the L150A's can sound very nice in a medium-to-large room... don't know if you'd
consider L112 or L96 on stands as "floor standing", but they can both sound quite
good as well. Don't skimp on the power or amp quality though (not that you would
:D).

I'm really open here. I don't have my heart set on any particular model. These will go in my back bedroom that has been converted into my audio tech room. They will be pushed with a SAE 2400 solid state amp. It was under rated from the factory, as I found out when I had it rebuilt and it pushed 275 wpc on the bench. I may bite the bullet and just buy some vintage studio monitors. Still would like to keep it under $500.

I continually see L112s for under $500. In fact there was recently a pair in the Recycler for $150. One of the local pro-audio shops in Orange CA has a pair of 4312s for $400.

XPL 140/160 are killer if you can find them in the $500 range, as are the 120Ti/240Ti.

The L5 is also a steal at $300/pair....

Just about any pair of SVAs can be had for under $500.

My recent purchase of SVA2100s AND an SVS Center for $460 proves that. Before that I got a pair of SVA1800s for $300, and before that another pair of SVA1800s for $165.

You gotta like the horns, though, and the Symmetrical Vertical Array dual woofer/mid design. Might be too much in a small room, as they're capable of intense sound levels.

Hi Wardsweb,

I've posted this link before some while back. Hope this helps to give you an idea of what the others are recommending. I personally would suggest 4425's, but am not sure what they're going for in the 'used' market in the US. I'm in Japan, and here they fetch anywhere from $1000 to $2000.

Good luck in your search.

I built my own 4411s because of the collector prices they fetch. I would consider building your own pair of JBL floorstanders if you have the means and tools. Every month new records are being broken on legacy JBL stuff.

I own the L100T and I don't think the veneer is horrible at all. I guess it's just a matter of opinion. COnsidering everything today is plastic and vinyl what more could you ask for?

Thanks for the link. It really helps to know what people are talking about. From just looking at the pics, I like the looks of most anything that starts with a 43XX. The searc continues.

I agree with the boys, the L100T & L100T3 are great speakers,I have a slight leaning toward the T3 as they were "re-voiced" changes to the X/over,but..........the real sleeper in my opinion is the 240ti, 14''woofer and the Rolls-Royce of titanium tweeters have a listen if you can,you willlik

However, they will blow away the L100's, L65's and 4311's.

I have a hard time believing that they are that much better than the L65 Jubals, what do you guys think about the L100T's overall as floorstanders?

I like my L100t's and L100t3's both as well as some of the much more expensive offerings I have like 4425's, XPL160's.

Back in the day, I used to off road all over Michigan. I especially enjoyed winter and spring. I lived in the middle of nowhere at the end of a dead end gravel road. Over the years there I owned four IHC Travelalls and two IHC Scouts.

The bitchin'est Travelall was a 1967 with a five speed manual. It had a crawler gear that was literally a stump puller. It was impossible to stop until the carb overflow valve choked on a piece of grit and started the engine on fire.

The Scout IIs were great: some of the best rolling hardware of their time with the cheapest sheet metal in history. I drove both until they literally fell apart around me. Those Scouts were great for plowing, pulling, and pushing. When we took them snow jumping in the winter, sometimes we'd get knocked off into ravines or creeks, but they always got themselves out. And we pulled lots of Jimmys, Broncos, and Bow Ties out of trouble. The Jeeps seemed to do fine by themselves.

Taking them to the state forests was a blast, as there were numerous off road trails and areas. I also had several hundred acres of woods behind my house.

The sound system was a custom installed head with separate amps and two JBL custom built (by me) boxes flopping around in the back.

Now that was NOT a "sleeper" system.

I thought that my 240TIs were sleepers. Probably just because I had never heard of them myself until I saw a set for sale and bought them. They seem to be fairly well known here on this board though. They have the LE14H-1 woofer, giving them accurate and deep bass response. That would be the first thing you notice. I loved the way they would give me a little kick in the gut on a recording with good bass drum. But these woofers never intrude when it's not called for, they just give you what's on the recording. The midrange is the 104H-1, an updated version of the LE-5 series with a poly cone. The next (H-2) version is still used in the 4412A studio monitor, so it was not just the consumer grade stuff. Then the 044Ti tweeter, which seems to be much sought after around here. My tweeters needed to be rebuilt, but I was very impressed with them after that was done. Some seem to think that these speakers are lacking in the lower midrange area due to pushing the big woofer up to 800 hz, but I never found it to be a noticeable problem. These are finished off in a nice teak veneer, which I consider to be some of the last nice cabinets made before the black vinyl plauge started to spread. Typically they go for under 1000 a pair used, and if that's your price range, I'd look for a set.

Two models come to mind and both utilize the venerable LE14A...and both 2-way ....with the LE20 on top.

The S99 Athena and the L55 (floor standing)...powerful bass( providing the Lans-a-loy is compliant) smooth mids, and sparkling highs.

These were produced when JBL's veneer quality was second to none and with the lattice grilles they are strikingly handsome.

In my office I've had L100's, 4311's, 4312b and nothing comes close to the 99's....and these can be had for around $300. :D

I has own L65 Jubal but sold them because I considered them as the least good sounding speaker that I own.(sounded nice on low levels in close distans).

Got L100T GI and really likes them, easy to find them to be a good choice for alround use.
L150A sounds really great and has a nice lowend, great midrange and 044 tweeter. The lowest frekvences are better performed than in the 240Ti:applaud:

The 240Ti lacks midrange, has great lowend and the 044Ti, i think the sound is a little bit "compressed" hard to describe but those of you that has compared with the other speakers that I listed maybe understand:o:

I like the L150A for the more "open" and "live" sound. 240Ti is a pretty boring speaker compared to the 250Ti Lim edt. that has a really nice sound compared to the most speakers. The L96 also sounds great and "live" but lacks lowend.

I belive that a mix with the above listed speakers elements and filters should have a pretty good potential to becomme a really good sounding speaker.

Thats my opinion.. Speaker taste is like the butt, divided :p

The bitchin'est Travelall was a 1967 with a five speed manual. The Travelall is probably the same as a '68 1200B 4x4 crewcab that I drove for a while. Great truck with tons of low-end.

IMHO L110s at $200 (recent Ebay price) have to be considered the JBL sleeper!

JBL 240ti's are a sleeper not to far behind 250ti's for around $800.00. I don't understand way. Set them up about 1.50" and they and are very good.
