I have a chance at a pair of Altec Lansing Model nine speakers for $100.00 CAD. Original owner is selling them. Havn`t had a chance to view/hear them yet and wondering if $100.00 is a good price? Thanks-Joe

It depends. If the woofer and mid-range have not been re-surround(ed), that will need to be done. I did mine about 3-years ago, and it worked great. Between Rick Cobb and GordonW, I was able to find the proper surrounds. :applaud:

Thanks Bo. Yes I`ve read GordonW`s advice (from AK I believe or here) on re-foaming these buggers..using the thinnest possible film as a tool for centering the VC. Are the surrounds for this particular model difficult to be had and costly,if needed? I`m basicaly just starting out in the field of vintage speaker collecting and curious as to their sound and value in general. From what I`ve gathered, condition of the cabinets seem to play a major role in their value. First hand and all opinions on their sound will be greatly appreciated.-Joe

Hi, Joe...

Welcome to your new all-consuming hobby! :rotfl:

You may not need to shim these - if the spider is still sound, all you need do is replace the surrounds. Like this: http://audioheritage.csdco.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=469&highlight=resurround+step-by-step

I got the Model Nine woof surround from Rick Cobb. The midrange was not quite so easy, but GordonW noted is identical to a Bose 901 (sorry, doods... :o: ) woof, and that surround worked fine.

I think there is a thread on this Model Nine - let me check...

I enjoyed my Model Nine's from new (1974) until the surrounds decrepitated. Then, this refurbishing brought them back to life.

Oh, yea, I forgot about this.

Joe read this, and then when you get the model nine's make sure that cap on the rear of the MF is in place (simply re-glue if not...).

"Oh, BTW: this is one woofer, that I DEFINITELY recommend removing the dustcap and shimming the voice coil on, when you re-foam the driver"

Exact same article I read regarding the fix.
Thanks Bo.
