I have A driver that has a very low Q what affects would I expect by changing the foam surounds over to a rubber suround . would this change or should I say raise the Q ? thats what I need is to rase the Q :blink:

First of all we need to know which driver you are talking about.
Next statement is: stay original which means in your case refoam with foam! Everthing else is trial and error which is not recommended with expensive and rare drivers.

If yours is damaged or you are experiencing foam rot, the recone kit price is only $215 (not bad for a $665 woofer). You should stick with the original.

Rubber surrounds are HEAVIER (ie, more mass) than foam surrounds, which will upset the efficiency of the driver. With rubber surrounds, the midrange output will be REDUCED, compared to the original driver. This will cause problems matching up with mids and tweeters in a system that was calibrated for a stock driver.

Also, rubber surrounds are NOT as linear as foam surrounds, as far as excursion vs. stiffness and hysteresis are concerned. Believe it or not, you can frequently have LOWER DISTORTION with foam surrounds...
