View Full Version : Recone Impedience

Today I'm taking in three 2205's for recone as 2235's. These are to replace the 130As in L200 cabinets and are to be used with LE175/HL-91, 075, N1200, N8000.

I am assuming that it is best to retain the crossover point as low as reasonably possible/feasible. To this end, I would think that it would be best to have these reconed at 16 ohms (assuming there are 16 ohm 2235 coils), (but I could be wrong) as the old crossovers were designed for this impedience.

I had heard that the N1200s use autotransformers and the impedience of the speakers (at least the horns) shouldn't really matter. However, when I view the schematic for the N1200, it appears to me that at maximum, the autotransformer is bypassed. When I put an 8 ohm resistor in series with the horn, my octave spectrum analyze DOES show a slightly flatter, extended low frequency extension on the horn.

Any opinions?

These are going in today at lunch so time is of the essence.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for your continued help.

I don't think there ever was a 2235J (16 ohm). The N1200 was called an 8 ohm network in the 1975 component catalog... I wouldn't sweat it too much. I'd be more concerned about the system performance from 500Hz to 1200Hz... not much you can do about it with those components though.:(

Did you ever find the last 2205 you were looking for? There's a basket case on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-2205A-15-SPEAKER-NEEDS-TO-BE-REPAIRED_W0QQitemZ7374787718QQcategoryZ47095QQrdZ1 QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks,

However, at this point I've purchased a new W15GTI in it's place. It will should be interesting to have a 2205 (reconed as 2235) and the W15GTI in the same chambered cabinet for direct comparison.

Thanks again.
