Rookie question here: I have a pair of JBL LX44's that I've had since college days 15 years ago. These trusty speakers are showing some wear, specifically on the woofer (408G).

Not sure if I'm describing this right, but the area just inside the foam has deterioriated and diminishes sound quality w/ bass (obvious, huh???) I see that the 408G woofer is not available through Harman and is $150/per if it were. (I don't think I paid over $400 for the speakers new).

What recommendations does anyone have? 1) Is there a way to fix the woofer? 2) Is there another substitute woofer that would work? 3) Or do I just go Christmas shopping for new speakers?

Thanks in advance!!!

...the area just inside the foam has deterioriated and diminishes sound quality w/ bass Do you mean the surround (compliance)? Maybe a pic would help.

Maybe someone knows a replacement, as well. I'll look too.

Check eBay. I found and resold a pair of 410G woofers on ebay this past summer

Thanks bo, here is picture:If the woofers haven't been played to hard while in this condition, they are easily repaired. You can possibly do it yourself, or take them to a speaker repair shop and have them refoamed.

Here is Dr. Bo's DIY repair thread.
