Hi,

I have a pair of 4331A's with woofers that need refoaming.

I pulled the drivers out and found that thet don't match - one is a 2220B and the other is a 2231A???

I know that they are supposed to have 2231A's in them, but what the hell is a 2220B? It's not listed at the JBLpro website.

The other mysterious thing is the cones have written on them (on the back) 2231A with a wax pencil.

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers

Chris

Chris,
Try a search in these forums for those model numbers and you will find a wealth of information. If I remember correctly the 2220 is the pro version of the 130A and although it is very similar to . . . there are some differences between it and the family of frames that can be reconed as 136/2231/2235 and it may be best to not invest in a refoam, but to rather try to find a correct frame. You might also consider reconing the 2231 and any compatible frame you find with the 2235 kit, which in earlier discussions (which you will find with a search) is described as having an improved suspension. The 2220B was, I think, a 16 ohm version of the 2220.

Don't take any of this as authoritative, but rather as a suggestion for which directions to go with your investigation.

I agree with speakerdave.

The 2220B is a 16 ohm version of the 2220A. It will not properly handle a 2231/2235 cone kit. I've posted numerous times which baskets take which kits so a search on the forum should turn up some useful info.

Thanks for the replies, I did do a search on the 2220B but didn't realise it was just a 16 ohm 2220A.

I'll start looking around for a 2231A or similar.

Thanks

Chris

Did the search, with the keywords "2231 2235 136"...

Here's the thread you want:

If it were me, the only caveat I'd take into consideration, is that you would want to use an alnico motor basket, to match the alnico magnet 2231 you already have. Technically, you COULD use a ceramic, if your 2231 was magnetically-recharged up to original strength... but still, there's a difference in the flux geometry, so it would still sound a bit different...

Gordon.
