Hi all. I've been digging thru this site for a few days and finally registered. While a fan of that other horned speaker design I love the JBL and Altec speakers as well. While I own speakers from both camps I do not have the pleasure of having any with horns in them. I'm curious that there is more talk of JBL and less of Altec. Are the Altecs less worthy of discussion or some other factor?

Only that this is a desginated JBL site. There are historic genetic ties between the two, and so therefore lotsa Altec stuff comes-up. There is another site more Altec specific - let me search for that Link...

Yea, here it is: http://alteclansingunofficial.nlenet.net/index.html (http://alteclansingunofficial.nlenet.net/index.html)

Got it. I assumed (that's where it all went wrong:banghead: ) due to the Altec product information found on this great site that it was for both. Sorry it won't happen again:scold:

Yes we talk a lot about JBL and it is the main focus, but no one is going to scold you for Altec. So in that theme, here is one of my A7's with the grill off. Although, I'm fixing to pull the drivers out of these for another project.

Due to cost factor, I use Altec compression drivers with Edgar woodhorns and the VLF/LF/MF section is JBL all the way for me!!!! :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

By the way, the Altec 811B horns are not that bad, and no I don't dampen them unless they are used for high level spl use!

Hi,

I got a pair of A7s too, and converted it to a 3-way with JBL 2405 by adding a home-made N7000 crossover. I put them in a small room (3.5 x 3.5m) and took me sometime to get it to sound right. Now it rocks! But I'm also looking out for a pair of JBLs to complete my collection.

I prefer Altecs to JBLs myself though a friend's 3115s sound very, VERY good.

To those claiming this is a dedicated JBL site I'll reply that those who listen to big Altec systems are more likely to be listening to drivers designed by James Lansing himself than most JBL listeners are.

:D Like so many times in the past , Tom you've hit the nail on the head !

- This site ? An exclusive club, only for JBL chit-chat ? That's a ludicrous belief to hold / though some may wish it true

Those interested should read Don's Introduction page of the Lansing Heritage site. This is not a JBL (the company) dedicated or designated site, at least not to the exclusion of Jim Lansing's other endeavors. Discussions of the products of Lansing Manufacturing Company and Altec Lansing Corporation are every bit as welcome and appropriate here. Most discussion on the forums does tend to center on JBL products, but this was not by design. Much of the web discussion of Altec products does happen on Todd White's site, but it is just as welcome here.

Are the Altecs less worthy of discussion or some other factor? Not really. It's just that JBL buried Altec in the ground ass up so kids could park their bikes in the crack. There's not a whole lot more to talk about with respect to Altec than that.

I love JBL for certain things, and I loved Altec for others!

Altec 15in woofers had a certain openess and transparency, and made music sound really real! I always loved JBL tweeters and 18,s!

There was something to the Altec sound. JBL did overtake them buisinesswise in the 70,s, but I think that was due more to Altecs bad management and equally bad buisiness decisions and manuevers!
