View Full Version : What Cones Go With What Baskets???

We frequently see both pro (2000 series) and consumer series JBLs that need reconing. I now know that both the 2231A and H and 2234H can be reconed as a 2235H. OCS also tells me that a 2205 can be reconed as a 2235.

I recognize that reconing ain't cheap. A 2235 "cone job" is now $174+tax at OCS. However, if I buy "basket cases," at least I know I have new cones and surrounds, if I can pick the baskets up reasonable. I would rather pay $25+ for baskets and have them reconed at $174+tax than lay out $150 each for quote/unquote "perfect" speakers off ebay tht may or may not be perfect or need new surrounds soon/now.

So what speakers should I be looking for that could also be reconed as a 2235?

Once the various models are reconed as 2235s, would they all have the same T/S parameters, or would these still vary with the base model?

You guys have been wonderful.
Thanks.

Interesting that the 130A doesn't work. Of my four 15's (L/C/R/Sub), two are 130As and two are D130s that were "supposedly" reconed as 130As by OCS. One would think that this being the case, they too would be similar enough that a similar cone would fit. Or, maybe D130s converted to 130As aren't quite the same as true 130As (i.e., just change to a paper cap).

While I recognize that the cones between the models referenced in your link are interchangable, I can certainly see differences in the magnetic structures/frames, even between the different alnico models. It would seem to me that this too would have impact on the sound (and I don't mean the alnico/ferrite debate) such that one would not want to mix unlike baskets if possible.

Any thoughts on this?

Is there a listing of which baskets are identical (except perhaps color)?

I am not sure what the magnet return pot casting of the 2135 looks like. I assume it is like the black group. The Blue group are considered identical to the black group, but have a slightly larger and different shaped casting. The violet group are all ferrite.

Todd...

The 130A is supposed to get reconed with a 2220 recone kit...and that's it. OCS knows this but somehow feel it's ok to go against factory convention and put a different kit in an incompatible basket. There is no documention within the JBL Service manual that states what the outcome will be when reconing a basket outside of the interchangability list. Although the older 4" voice coil models will physically fit into the gap and might "work", obviously there is a reason that the factory doesn't recommend it. What you end up with is what has been referred to here as a "Frankenstein". The gap in a 130A/2220 is deeper than others in the interchangablity list and therefore the voice coil of a different kit will be in a different static position whan at rest. Alot of people don't realize this and then get sold a driver that really has no correct specs.
It's just wrong to do this.

The 2135 is an alnico pot that is identical to a K130. It currently calls for an E130 recone kit.

Is it a rounded back, or beveled back? The 2231A and 136A both take the same kit too, but are not physically exactly the same. Maybe that's a bad example since they both take the 2235H kit now that the C8R2231 has long been discontinued.

I can't tell from the photo in my 1976 JBL Catalog if it's rounded or beveled. But there was a transition period between 1977 and 1980 that saw a paring down of model numbers in the catalog due to models that overlapped in specs. 2135 (alnico)was identical in specs and cone assembly to K130, 2130 (alnico) was same as K120, and there are others as well.

interestingly the 136A has a "flat" back where the K140/130 ( later generations ) have a recess for the foilcal. There was a limited distribution "M" series that were clones of the K120/130/140 that didn't have recessed foilcals.

The "beveled" magnets are only in the proline ( gray mags ). Maybe they made them in black for overseas distro but I have never seen one ( and I have seen 1000+ )

While they can all take the same C8R2235 kit, the differences between the final product is very close unless you use them in a 2 way system with very different magnets and even then hearing a difference is like hearing a mouse fart 2 rooms away.

eeeeeee

I've got a 2135 boxed up in storage, would it be any help to take a pic of it? It was re-coned in 1985 or so, not sure what kit was used at the time, I can note any markings I find on it as well.

The 21-Series magnet pots are slightly different on the sides coming to the edge where they radius into the back (label) side. The magnet pots on the "21xx" versions may be a little taller than the "K" My old brochures indicate the 4" voice coil 21-Series drivers weigh approximately 1 lb. more than their equivalent K-series driver. "K" and "21xx" versions used the same cone kits.
