Am new to this forum and it seems great. I have been lurking at AA and audiokarma. I picked up a pair of these 4430s with new woofers and no grills. I wonder how best to hook up these big boys, and what the two adjustments on the front actually mean. Lastly, any suggestions on how to make grills for these? Thanks Norm

Grilles for 4430 may still be available from JBL Pro.

A forum member had a pair for sale. Use "Search" to find out who.

Plenty to read about 4430's in these pages, as well. They're a forum favorite.... :)

Hey, congrats on your 4430s. You'll like them for sure.

Many people prefer to bi-amp them, and many prefer to simply drive them with a powerful stereo amp. I've tried it with successively more powerful stereo amps (105W/ch, then 165W/ch, then 200W/ch, then 235W/ch), and more power is better. They don't get louder with incremental power increases like this, but they seem to get better at the low end.

I haven't tried them in bi-amp mode. (Yet.)

Hi again Norm. I'm going to put a bug in your ear on this forum, too! This is kinda my "home" forum, and guys here want your 4430's to be up to snuff. Do find a way to get the woofers pulled and see what they are. I also have a pair of old ratty 4430 grills that I may not need before long, if you need them. Get some help and lets see what drivers are actually in there now.

(Norm indicated on another forum that the woofs have been replaced with something that aint a 2235H)

Oh Oh :scold:

Then this is no 4430 any longer. We should help Norm to find some 2235H !!

I think that you will need to cut out a sheet of particle board to fit, paint it black and cover it with cloth.

how are you Bi-Amp guy's doing CD compensation ...???The passive HF boost remains in play in "Ext" mode. Check out the early pages of the Q&D 4430's thread.

I used 5235 with the factory 4430 cards. Frankly, running it full passive was better, though I'm still set up to run that way, and will try it again.

A lot of listening to various configurations has transpired since then.... :p

For these speakers an earlier post said more power is better. Is it simply more power or a higher damping factor or both that seem to make the speaker sound best. I am currently using a pioneer sx 850 with a damping factor of 25. I also could hook up an sx 950, a little more power but same damping factor. Any recommendations? Thanks. And I will pull the woofers to see what they are. Norm BTW, thanks for welcoming me into the fold.

Norm, don't draw any real conclusions until you have the proper woofer in there; no comparison.
