A friend of mine picked these up for me. I was surprised at the sound of this more modern JBL speaker system. It is compromised of a 10" woofer(ported), a 5" mid cone and small dome tweeter.

Best attributes on this system is the mid/tweeter sound reproduction. I guess not everything new for JBL consumer is all that bad. They are 91db efficient and while they don't put out much with my 45 SET amp, the soundstage was very impressive.

Played with my Sansui AU7900 (75wpc) played with decent authority.

I tried searching for info on this forum about them, but found nothing. They have a 12" square footprint and approx 32" tall. They both look like they were one chnl of a "mirror-imaged" set.

Has anyone else seen these speakers before?

Is this part of the more modern "who-cares" group of JBL consumer products?

Now I know why no one cares and there is little to no info on these.

I took out the drivers to see what they are and found the following:

10" 510GN

5" 505G

1/2" Titanium tweeter 121TNV

Note: stamped frames on the woofer and mid, the tweeter looks very cheap.

Wierd thing is they sound half decent. No, not as good as the other JBL systems I have like the 4430's and 4311A's, but I can listen to them and not get annoyed with them.

Just thought someone might actually need this info some day.

Crossover has a single coil, 4 caps and a resistor.

I put them back together and they will stay as a quick back-up speaker system or loaner to friends on occasion.

I originally pulled the mid as I needed a 5" mid for a project, was hoping for a 104H, but not even close.

Well, obviously you're not talking about these:

http://jbl.com/home/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=S4800&CheckProduct=Y

so it must be these:

http://jbl.com/home/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=JBL4800&CheckProduct=Y

The Tech Manual is available on line here: http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/HOM/Technical%20Sheet/JBL4800%20ts.pdf

The Ultra 1230 Ti tweeter (70740-1) is pretty nice, and the other drivers are adequate. I'd keep a pair handy if I had 'em.

The parts are mostly available and surprisingly a bit more than I'd expect.

This seems like another case of "indirectly" not supporting the product by charging ridiculous prices for replacement parts...and some parts not being available, like that $3 titanium laminate 14mm Audax tweeter for $55. It kind of makes the products disappear on their own. Service centers just love this type of abuse....er, I mean treatment.

They sound alright if you don't push them much.

Before I removed them, I was hoping the mids would be 104H's, but so much for that.

I searched all over JBL home, how come I could not find anything?

It seems like there's more than one way to search for JBL products. If you use the default drop down product support menu, you only get a limited number of mostly recent models. However, if you use the product finder and can enter the exact model number, just about anything will come up.

Also, sometimes I've used the product finder to look up a vintage model that I know is there, like L5 for example, and once I'm there, the items in the support drop down menu seem to change to a much larger set which i can then browse for the models whose exact model number escapes me..

Hi,
I looked on line on where I can find 70740 speakers for my JBL 4800. I found your posts.
Do you guys have 2 I could buy?
Question-why would both blow, not just 1?

Hard to believe the tweeters are $54.00 each. For that kind of money you might find a usable substitute.

I found 1 guy on e-bay who has the correct tweeter. I need one more. Where can I find the one you were recommending for $54.00?
Otherwise, can you recommend a cheaper substitute?
Thanks!!!!

Some fans of the more modern JBL gear might be able to help out more. I am more retro/vintage myself.

If you haven't found one yet, there is one on eBay.

Alex:blink: Zilch is on it (as usual!). I blew an 075 ring-radiator once...about 36 years ago. Sent it back to JBL and they didn't charge me for the repair but suggested I look for a high-frequency oscillation in my amp. Instead I junked the Kenwood receiver, bought a Fisher SA-1000, then a Crown D-150 and haven't had a repeat of the problem—even with the same tweeter—since. What were you using to drive them?
