View Full Version : A Lunchtime Stroll Through Downtown Winnipeg

A couple of years ago on this very forum I posted that I was giving up SLR camera kits for good and that digital point and shoot cameras met everything I needed in photo gear. Time to eat some crow. In the past two years I have become more and more disillusioned in the high digital noise, exposure and focus errors, and lack of sharpness in my Minolta Dimage 7. This week, I bit the bullet and picked up a Canon Rebel XT and two zoom lenses. Today was their first major workout as I strolled the downtown area through my lunch hour. I'm now a true convert to digital SLR's.

Nice Don. I have a regular Rebel and a few USM lenses and have been thinking about a digital Rebel for a while now.

I think you just convinced me to pony up :) .

Don:

you know what DPI the pictures are?

Looks great, I'm thinking about getting my first digital SLR.

I'm still using the standard non-digital cameras

The DPI depends on your monitor. Most are around 70dpi. The resolution of the original photos is around 3500 X 2300 pixels (8 megapixels). On a 300 dpi printer (the publishing industry standard), this would allow 8 X 10 prints that should pretty much be indistinquishable from 35mm film. The pictures as posted here have been drastically shrunk to fit this forum to around 1000 x 660 pixels. In other words, you're only seeing about 1/12 the detail of the original images.

Your making me homesick big guy!

How about a picture of the Playhouse? That would bring back many fond memories of my Disc Jockey days. In fact, one of the most embarassing moments of my life happened there. Post a pic and I will share the story. Trust me, its a good one!

Nice to see you back and was sorry to hear the reason you were away.

And a pirate, too!

It's a beautiful city.

Hi Don,

I love cityscapes, and you've done a really good job with the camera.

Thanks,

David

How about a picture of the Playhouse?

That's an easy request. All I have to do is look out my window. Here you can see the side of the Playhouse theatre. Not much to look at from this angle.

Here it is from the front.

This photo is centered on the three windows of my condo. You can see the out of focus awning of the Playhouse on the right to put in perspective the location of my home in relation to this theatre.

Don, well now I know exactly where you live. They have turned that part of the old warehouse district into a nice little neighborhood. Julie and I toured through there a couple of years back.

I love the acoustics in that old theatre and saw some of my favorite concerts there. I will get back to this thread with the story. You will have a chuckle at my expense.

Thanks Don

I went back and forth a few years ago and finally sold mine and my wife's SLR's. I did a bunch of research and picked the Panasonic/Leica DMC-FZ10. They were $500 last x-mas and are down around $400 now. It's not an SLR, but it has a killer Leica 12X optical zoom lens. I'm still getting good with it but it can take some stunning photos. For example...
