Gerard I replaced one of my LE85/2420 diaphrams that was shot with a Cannon diaphram, it sounded "OK". Later when I had all the components rebuilt the LE85/2420 diaphrams were new JBL diaphrams and they cost about four times the price of the Cannon. Since other components had also been rebuilt it wasn't a true a/b test but the JBL sound like they were worth every dollar compared to the Cannon.

Why isn't Radian an option?

Gerard,

those 49 USD aftermarket dias are titanium, where the 2420(21) is aluminium. Thea sound DIFFERENT!
OK, Radian is Aluminum too but has a different surround.
Buy 2x D16R2421 and NOTHING else!

I've had numerous brands of titanium aftermarkets. I've had no complaint with any of them compared to the factory JBL titaniums. Move to an aluminum diaphragm and you will have a real sweet driver comparatively. I ran a cross a pair of LE85's with Radian aluminum diapragms. I have been using them on a pair of 2360A horns as a two way with an M552 powered by a CJ 100 wpc Premiere Four tube amp. I find them quite impressive at any power level right down to 500hz. I would HIGHLY recommend the Radian's over ANY titanium's, even the factory JBL titaniums. There is something soft and sweet about the aluminums that titanium cannot capture... http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/images/smilies/bouncy.gif

Gerard,

Buy 2x D16R2421 and NOTHING else!

Read Don's post on the 435be and diaphragm evolution before buying 2421's for $244 each. As with all things in life, there was a trade of one quality of the 2420 surround in exchange for the hf extension of the 2421 diamond surround. I'm not knockin' the 2421, just saying know what you're paying 5X more to get. For me, if it doesn't make an AUDIBLE difference to my ears, it's a waste of close to $400. Hmmm...what other toys could I buy with that $400...a pair of slots, a new set of tubes, a pair of L100's, maybe 4412's, another UREI 525...http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/images/smilies/blah.gif
How about a pair of 2435HPL neodynums with berylium diaphragms!!!

They are way too expensive, yes.

But I got a NIB spare pair for 150 Euro (190 USD) on German Ebay. And thats a good price :p

If you must go with aftermarket....the Radian 1225-8/16 is the best option. All the others I've heard aren't worth the trouble.

While on the subject of Radian diaphragms they make an aluminum replacement
diaphragm for the 2482 driver. The 2482 is normally a mid range only driver with the phenolic diaphragm and you can not put in a 2440, 2441, 2445, ect replacement. The driver body, phase plug, voice coil gap is the same as a 2440 or 2441 the only difference in the mounting ring for diaphragm is larger and the mounting screws holes will not line up. The diaphragm is the same as their replacments for a 2440 or 2441 only it has the larger ring. 2482 drivers typicaly sell for less even better if blown than a 2440 or 2441 will.
