I propose that any offensive Avatars or other offensive posts and or links to this forum should be deleted or otherwise removed. I'd actually like to share this forum with my kids and recommend it to other people interested in this industry/hobby. But if posts about enema bags with graphic depictions and other profanity that shows great disrespect for what this forum is all about...then what's the point. I'm sure there's officials from Harman Int'l that look in here every now and then, and anyone with common decency would want to distance there companies' affiliation with such a forum....

All I ask is to have common sense when when it comes to posting things that are generally in bad taste. If you think I'm being prudish in my views, I don't really care. What I care about is maintaining something other than a sophomoric little boy's club....or the forum will end up in the toilet

Thanks for reading,

What I care about is maintaining something other than a sophomoric little boy's club....or the forum will end up in the toiletIt would appear it is headed that way. It certainly is different than it was back in 2000. I'd personally like to see it all dumped and started over with a tighter rulebook in effect. I highly doubt that will happen.

:) Edge: I am 52, so there is really nothing that will shock me; You are right in stating that these, not even sophomoric attempts, they are more like 8th grade, make the forum cheap; once on a while, more sophisticated dirty humour is appreciated, but lately i find some stuff stupid; BTW, I also find the grammar and spelling from some native Americans offensive.

I understand what you're saying and why you're saying it. I respect your right to express your opinion, and you provide good rationale in support of it.

Nevertheless, you know I'm going to disagree with you, don't you?

I appreciate the freedom and generally uncensored flow of these forums. The moderators do a good job of plucking out the bad stuff without overreacting. I do not want to see the forum turned into a sanitized, artificial environment in which the rules of conduct diminish the free flow of information, ideas, and innuendo.

I've heard the "common sense" rule invoked so many times in my life, yet you know the saying: "Common sense ain't so common." (Sorry Alex; it's a quote and not my grammar. ;) ) What's common to you will not be common to me and will be different to a third and to a fourth party. It's not an effective measure.

Once or twice I think I've had a post removed by a mod, and I've not complained about censorship or anything like that, because the moderators are so good-natured and tolerant as a rule. I trust their judgment.

IOW, the forums are fine as they are and should be left to develop as they will. I do care about your opinions and am respecting them by this response, but your position is incorrect in my opinion.

For the most part, this is an adult audio forum! A bit of dirty humor here and there isnt neccesarily bad!

Really dirty, and hardcore pornographic material I would consider unacceptable, but we have kept things fairly clean, and WITHOUT having to use moderators and enforce rules!!!!!!!!

About the Joy, beauty, and life issue, I`m sorry to inform, it wasnt the first time we had someone post an ebay auction with that, the very same thing!

About avatars, well, everyone should just use good common sense! But again, we are an adult audio forum, not a school play! FWIW, I have seen FAR worse avatars on other forums! Never saw anything that was truly in bad taste, or really, really inappropriate in this forum!

I personally appreciate your post and understand your views however Censorship is a slippery slope. I agree about the avatars and any of the 5 words you can’t say on TV, George Carlin. As far as content well what’s offensive to you may not be to me. If you or anyone else views a post that you feel is offensive send a PM to the appropriate Moderator so we can look at it. I hate to tell you but all the audio forums are sophomoric boys clubs. What we have to do is try to raise the bar and not have the members feel that they are not free to post what’s on their mind. If someone drops a thread into Off Topic or Market Place about something they saw that struck them as funny I generally don’t have a problem with that. I just don’t want to see it in the mains forum so it would be moved. On my end I will delete posts that are personal attacks and disclose personal information outright with no explanation. If I see something that is walking the line I will give the poster the option to edit it. If it is truly offensive I will delete it. Another thing to remember is this is an adult sight. And just like any other unrated site a child needs supervision while on it. There have been links posted in archived posts and some Joke’s left in Off Topic that are not for a child eyes. The Library is certainly safe as well as the posted articles however the Forums are wide open. If you want to bring a child into the site access to the forums should be limited. I can see a 10 yr old getting into this and I have had my son on here lot’s of times but with me supervising. That said children should not be on ANY unrestricted forums in the first place just following common sense and internet safety without supervision. Just remember this is not a Barney site, we are mostly adults and our humor is what it is. Our archived content is what brings Harman here. I am sure they have enough sense to judge the site for it’s real content and not for the content in the public forums however useful some of it can be. It would be nice to have all the threads stay strictly on topic and have all questions answered with a correct answer the first time but it is not going to happen. The Forums are for questions and discussion and we will always have differing opinions on what the “right” answer is. Some of the best information comes from these discussions. Should we try to be “responsible” and keep it as clean as we can?? I am up for it personally but that’s my choice.

Rob:) I believe George Carlin had 7 words, not 5, that you could never say on TV! Your leading me to believe that words 6 and 7 are OK to use on the forum! Well maybe 7 does rate some acceptability, but 6, no way! Cant say that one in here! Nope not 6!

I think the rules for what you can and cannot say on TV have changed considerably since 1971 or whenever George Carlin actually did that " 7 words you can never say on TV ", just watch network TV, and hear for yourself!

By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.

Maybe it would be a good idea to go back and review the forum rules. If I understand correctly we all made an agreement when signing up for this so-called "adult audio oriented" forum....but it's very common to not read the fine print before checking the "I agree" box. Sorry...but I grew up in a household where the chief breadwinner, my late father, was a certified professional contracts administrator...and contracts do matter.

you know..... I miss the food, cemetaries, and liquor laws more than anything else..... yeah the girls act real nice there too!

love commanders for lunch..... their turtle soup is divine -- food was much better there last time I went when Jamie Shannon was at the helm.... no offense to the previous chef, great menu designer, great personality -- dude just can't cook worth a damn.... I need to get back home and try the new executive chef's cooking -- I think his name is tory something or other.....

I used to hang out in Fat City, or up in the garden district more than on Bourbon.... a little more local... although picking up tourists was a blast as a kid...... we used to get into the clubs/bars when I was 11.... good times I tell ya.... That is of course unless we were partying across the 'lavendar line' St Ann (in the gay bars -- hardcore partying, even for straight folk)

Next time I come across it, I will email you the recipe for Charley G's crabcakes -- in the 92/96 timeframe -- they were considered the best in the city...... I knew the chef at the time.....

gotta admit it though, it was hard to excell at college level academics in that city...... we had a bor on campus and regullary walked into class with pitchers of beer or glasses of whiskey! guess that's why they pulled my full ride.... :(

oh and to get this rant on topic --- I find it offensive that in most states they cut off liquor sales at 2AM (or whenever -- it,s 24/7 where I came from -- we used to run this club that opened thursday at 6 for the pool tourney and the place didn't close until 11 AM on Monday.... -- we used to sell sunglasses b/c NOBODY remembered to bring them in when they got there at 3AM) --- seems to be a public safety hazard to me....

Here in CO, they force all the drunks on the road at 1:30 AM...

doesn't it make more sense to NOT stop serving so that there is a trickle of people leaving the bars (say from midnight to 3 or 4 in the afternoon) instead of having every single drunk ass on the road at the same time????

I went to Fat City, been goin to Orleans since `79! Ate in all the famous restaurants, and these little out of the way places you had to know about to find! Some of the best edibles, ever!

Went to Emirils the first year they opened, we did the tasting menu! Absolutely incredible, never knew food could be that good!

You gotta love the stories they tell you about the dishes, where the vegatables grew up, how the chef cleaned em, why he cooks them the way he does, exactly how old the lamb was when he became a chop!

I also dig Alex Patout,s cooking!

Hello Edgewound

"By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."

Please define what vulgar means to you?? What is obscene?? Do we go buy what we see on network TV every night??? I agree in principle to the point you are making however enforcement is a difficult task in an open forum. If you use any of the Smilies Bo posted they could be considered obscene. A nice looking girl in an Avatar even a picture of your own wife could be considered as sexually orientated or vulgar if it's provocative.

also at the end of canal, near the Metairie line is a place called the Beach Corner -- they had the best grilled rare tuna sandwiches (at 5AM or anytime for that matter) and this was before the craze for rare tuna started.... had to be late 80,s..... the only issue with that particular bar was that it was owned by ex-police officers.... best not go in if you were noodled out of your head....

Parental settings on the computer anyone?

I think the practicality of it is driven by our degree of control and influence.

Virtually anyone can join and and anyone can view these forums, there is no age limit I am aware of?

But what what are the forums?

Aside from the technical reference areas, most of this forum is about baby boomers (av age is 48) re living a passion for big boys toys.

This forum is not an AES convention although one or two like to lift whole pages of the journal and post here. Perhaps we should be more concerned about Copyright?

So I tend to not get too hung up on the content. The library is and will most likely remain the reference for historical and technical data.

But, IMHO I feel that the bigger problem is ppl being so darn 'politically correct' that they refuse to engage in a bit of wordplay ,humor, or other interactions due to the 'possibility' that it may offend someone.... seriously... ppl get their panties in a wad over crap.....

When I first moved to Denver, I could not believe that not a single family run Italian restaurant (that I have found in the 5 YEARS I have lived here) had a 'wop salad' on the menu.... And I know that 'wop' is not the term to use in polite company, but most of the family run Italian restaurants that I used to frequent in NOLA had on their menus a 'wop salad' -- when I asked, everyone in Denver was just taken aback.... then I described what I was looking for, and if they had anything like it, It was called something like 'the family or house salad' or some other garbage..... I mean, if it offends you, Please stand up and say so.... but I refuse to live my life constrained by what may or may not offend 'someone' out there in the world....... adn I really don't care if I offend, to me; we should be offended at the amount of hunger in the world, or the lack of morals of our next generation (although I wish oral wasn't sex when I was in HS or middle school fo rthat matter), or the entitlement mentality that plagues certain sections of our society..... :biting: :blah:

I agree that the personal attack was probably not warranted, however it was not the most malacious nor abusive I have ever seen.....

Glad that you are able to vent....

there is a great tradition of "Laissez Faire" where I come from, almost as long a tradition as "Laissez les bon temp roulez (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Laissez+les+bon+temp+roulez&spell=1)" I think that some need both to have one!

for those who don't know:
Laissez Faire = hands off, let it be; roughly
Laissez les bon temp roulez (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Laissez+les+bon+temp+roulez&spell=1) = let the good times roll

Carry on. :)

Ever notice how new orleanians always want to have a good time and just carry on about nonsense...... :D

Oh and BTW -- the earlier comment about the median/mean/mode age in here makes me feel like I am hanging out with a bunch of old farts..... I,m not 30 yet.......

JFWY.... let the stoning begin! :thnkfast:

true true..... it is when I speak -- you know what suprises me.... (Scott will get a kick ou tof this one) --- PPL are always asking me if I am from NYC or one of the burroughs.... guess it,s a simmilar lazy tounge, when I tell em no, i'm from NOLA; they always say -- 'oh I can hear it now"

I used to hang in Laffite,s occasionally --- had a friend that lived on Bourbon just down the way towards Esplanade.... I used to really hang out at the Cat's meow during the day (for the 3 for 1 specials -- anything they served) or Johnny White's (just around the corner from Cat's) after 3 for 1 ended (for the generous pours and low prices).....

surely miss the music scene as well...... favorite live music venue in NOLA is the Howling Wolf in the warehouse district -- followed closely by the original Tipitina,s (garden district/irish channel)....... (not sure if the OG tips is still open though)

If any of y'all are into Jazz -- the best time to visit NOLA is the last weekend in April/First weekend in May -- Jazzfest! :applaud: .... I used to live in a duplex on Ponce de Leon St.... I could open My back door and hear the Ray Ban Stage (main stage) for FREE....... miss those days....... only thing was that everyone tried to steal my parking space.... but that is a story for another time..... kinda vulgar what I would do sometimes..... ;)

Earlier this year, I made my annual pilgimage to NOLA.

Bourbon Street is an increasing disappointment. Good to great musicians working their tails off playing through Harman systems run FAR too loud. There were no SPL meters, anywhere. I like it loud, but this was painful.

Harman swept through the Street a few years back and got nearly all the clubs on some pretty good gear, but it is so dang loud it cannot be enjoyed - not a single club (except Fritzels...). The soundguys are all still pretty cool, and you can have a chat with them, but they are driving things too hard.

Frenchman Street, on the other hand, is phenomenal. Small, cozy and cool clubs where some REAL talent is circling, with hit-or-miss systems, but what a great experience. Check it out... :applaud:

I can empathize with that. They visit this site regularly and reference it for information. It would appear it is headed that way. It certainly is different than it was back in 2000. I'd personally like to see it all dumped and started over with a tighter rulebook in effect. I highly doubt that will happen.
What was your user name in 2000?

By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.

Maybe it would be a good idea to go back and review the forum rules. If I understand correctly we all made an agreement when signing up for this so-called "adult audio oriented" forum....but it's very common to not read the fine print before checking the "I agree" box. Sorry...but I grew up in a household where the chief breadwinner, my late father, was a certified professional contracts administrator...and contracts do matter.

For crying out loud, it doesn't really say "orientated" does it? I hate that.

What was your user name in 2000?I remember using three that year. asshole, asswipe and asshat. In 2001 I ditched the "begins with A" theme and mixed it up a bit.

One mans trash is another mans quote. Censorship is a difficult issue. This IS an adult forum. I've seen far worse displays on my teenage sons AIM, and that is parentally controlled. Contrary to popular belief, just because your child is in his room on AIM doesn't necessarily make him/her safe. So what has this to do with this forum? Lots. I don't see any chicken porn here, nor do I find the site littered with XXX advertising. Members content is far from offensive. Of course what is offensive to me ( Semi recovering sailor/recovering alcoholic/nursing school student) is not what might be offensive to others.
I don't see Larry Flint posting here, or Carlin, Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy.
Neither do I find the Pope.
Although I did object to Zilchs mustang advertisement for showing too much Mustang.
Get a grip folks. This site is alot safer than most.

I think we can see a wide variety of takes on this subject, and rather than censor any of it I'll close it now.
