View Full Version : LE85-2426 opinions

I would like to get some comparison opinions about these two drivers. I bought some H92's recently and they need drivers. I see that the D55000 uses these drivers. I love how smooth the LE85/2420's sound but cannot remember hearing a 2426. Thank you, Steve G.

I may be wrong but I believe the Everest used the 2425. Anyway I have both the LE85, 2426 and the 2470 and still prefer the LE85 in a 1" driver. Although the 2426 has a better top end but without good equalization it tends to sound a little harsh on the H92 horn. I have read that using a 2421 aluminum diaphram in a 2426 will bring back the smoothness.

Yes, you are correct, the D55000 does use the 2425, I was thinking of the 4660 which uses the 2426. I love the alnicos anyways and I would use either of them up to about 5k. Thank you.

Steve

IMO - Your soliciting "opinions" about (at least) 2 highly subjective areas :

(1) Ferrite vs Alnico ; ie, Is there a sonic difference ?
(2) Aluminum vs Titanium diaphragms ; ie, What are peoples preferences ?

- Many of us here have gone around the block more than a few times discussing the various subjective differences .

- I'd be happy to participate by articulating my opinions and how they relate to the drivers you've mentioned ;

That is after ;

Scott ( the moderator ) relocates this thread to a more appropriate Forum were "opinion" will be divorced from implied "fact" ( as in technical fact ).

I find the LE85 smoother and warmer than 2426, at least comparing the three of them I have been using here recently. 2426 is fine, of course, but if I boost them too much, they get nasty real quick.

I like the sound of the aluminum diaphragms better, is all, and it's one reason I have committed to 2431H, which has allegedly solved the suspension longevity problems associated with aluminum fatigue by incorporating an alternative material (kapton?) surround.

Mr. Widget measured one of the LE85's here, and found it actually had better HF extension than the 2426 we compared it to, which brings the subject into the "technical" realm. We'd have to test a bunch of them to arrive at any conclusions, though.

While it may be true that titanium diaphragms have greater long-term reliability in high-power sound reinforcement applications, these 40-year-old aluminum ones seem to still be playing just fine; in typical home use, they don't see that much stress, perhaps.

I use both 2426 and le85. These drivers are very différent in response. May be the le85 is smoother, but they are far more details in the 2426h design... No comparaison in listening. By the way, this week I just removed 2425 from my JBL 4435, and replace with 2426. It seems to be more "clear" than before.
As any one ever make this test.
2425 vs2426.
Thanks for comments, and thanks Zilch for the EBAY urei 6210 bid....

For a 2 way system, I prefer the 2425/6 over the 85. The '25/6 have a better Hi end than the 85. You still have to balance either with the rest of the system. JBL made the 2671 to be used in three way systems where as the LE85/2420 was used in 2 and 3 way systems.(4331 & 4333). The 2421, 2425, 2426 were used in 2 way systems (4430, 4435).

"As any one ever make this test.
2425 vs2426."

They should be very similar. They use the same replacement diaphram and I believe phase plug. The bodies are different with the 2425 having a solid nose and the 2426 with a threaded adaptor. The 2425S and a 2426 with its "nose" off looks like the same driver??? Don't know what the diference is and why JBL would stock both as different drivers. I use 2416's and a 2425S and can't readilly hear a difference.

Hi, I have moved this thread to the general section, as per Earls request and Dons advice!

This is in no way meant as anything other than the fact that this thread asks for "opinion" rather than "technical" facts, and therefore belongs here, instead!

Carry on, gentlemen!

Please refrain, unless it's necessary to prevent blatant misuse of the board (ie, starting a non-JBL conversation on one of the main forums, etc), from chopping up threads like this.

In this case, we lose the context in which the original question was posed, IMHO. Others may think it's OK, but that's the way I see it... as a loss of information.

Regards,
Gordon.

kind of gives one the impression that you are being censored or something.
