I'm presenting it to the esteemed members of this forum.

Which is the better of the two: L65 Jubal (first version) or the L166?

Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Charley

The L65 is an end table, the L166 is a "bookshelf" loudspeaker. Guess which one is a "form before function" design?

BTW, we built several custom "bookshelf" systems using the L65 components. They fit in an L166 sized enclosure just fine. The stock L166 was a better balanced system.

I had a Jubal as a center channel and as Giskards says putting them in a bookshelf sized speaker to get them up off the floor or having them up on stands is the best option. Never heard 166's.

I'd have to concur, the L166 is better balanced, primarily in the bottom end.

Now, I haven't heard L65 components in a bookshelf box, elevated on stands... but I'd expect it to better the L166, in the top end, while the L166 should win in the mids (less peaky driver).

IMHO, neither of them will better an L112 or 120Ti... those designs simply GOT IT RIGHT...

Gordon.

The L166 was sort of the beginning of JBL's transition towards making really accurate speakers. When it came out it was well recieved as a speaker that combined the better attributes of the older JBL speakers with a smoother overall response. The L65 was a decent speaker but did not really stand out sonically. They were boh available at the same time.
