Hi guys, is it possible to use the foam surrounds from a 2245h driver on a 2241-h? If so what caractoristics would the 2241 gain.

I'm by no means an expert on foam vs pleated surrounds so I can't comment on the effect of changing from one to another. However to the best of my knowledge foam surrounds aren't available from JBL and must be purchased from 3rd party suppliers. But to answer your question with another question..... why would you want to? The 2241 has pretty a decent xmax of almost 8 mm to start with I believe. If you're looking for bass I think the stock 2241 will probably be fine as is. In a 300 L. box it will get down to 35Hz. If you don't mind messing with your drivers a bit( ok a lot) you could try and add mass under the dustcap.
I played with the numbers a bit and found that by adding 130 grams to the cone, the Fs drops to 25Hz (the eff. gets clobbered as a result but still decent at 93 dB/W) . With the same 300L. box tuned to 25Hz. you get flat to 25 Hz, at least according to the simulation.
This is a basically a project I've also toyed with in my head for a while, I just have a tough time justifing taking the knife to 18" drivers who's recone kits are in the 300.00 - 400.00 dollar range. There are a lot a participants on this forum with a ton more expereince than me so hopefully they will chime in and help you out.

Hey, Mike C...

You're the "lucky one" (to take nothing from Allison Krauss...) - the surrounds of both the 2245 and 2241 are addressed in this, which is a great read if you've not done so already:
http://www.lansingheritage.org/html/jbl/reference/tech1-3a.htm :readme:

It may not answer your question, but it is certain to raise some! ;)

Great article!, now for the questions, of course:

Is there a ribbon wire supplier (in small quantities), or do I have to roll my own?

Thanks.

ALL the punchy sounding 18,s and 15,s I loved from the late 70,s and 80,s were loaded with second harmonic distortion! But, yet it didnt sound like distortion in the sense of the music sounding distorted.
