I'd like to get some opinions on whether to use a 2404H, 2405 (alnico), or neither in a 4430 like system. Current plan is 5 cubic feet cabinet using a 2235H and a LE85/2344A combination.

Is there any advantage to adding UHF over the 2344A?

Thanks for your input.

If you build the 4430 crossover with HF boost (advised), you won't need to add UHF.

You'll want to install the 8-Ohm aluminum or titanium diaphragm in the LE85 if you do that.

If you're gonna add UHF anyway, use 2404 so's it matches the biradial horn pattern of 2344.

I second that ;)

Thanks for the advise. The 4430 crossover looks pretty straightforward and uses mostly standard component values.

The Genuine JBL diaphragms are reasonably priced at a mere $245 each (almost the price of a new 2404). As much as I'd prefer to go pure JBL are any of the after market diaphragms worth considering?

Then again, would I be better off to consider a different driver? I can pick up a pair of 2426H or J and put in new diaphragms for the price of the D8R2421's.
Also, is it possible to turn a 2405 into a 2404 by replacing the horn and wedge with 2404 parts?

Put D8R2425 (titanium) diaphragms in the LE85's, instead. Early 4430's were made with 2421, but JBL soon switched to 2425H.

2426H will work fine, of course, if you want to keep the LE85's intact.

I suppose it'd be possible to convert the N3134 crossover for 16-Ohm HF drivers, but I'm not aware that anybody's done it successfully. Beyond my expertise, too, alas. LE85's would very likely play sweetly there.

I believe you can convert the 2405 to 2404, yes, but 2404's are themselves cheap to come by of late ($100 ea). I wouldn't tear into 2405's to make them.

Adding UHF to 4430 is not commonly done, as it's not necessary for that system. You'll see....

While it is possible, it is ill advised as the 2405s are inherently worth more on the used market than the 2404. You would be throwing money away.

I suggest you buy a pair of 2404s and compare them to the 2405s you have, then sell the pair of tweeters that you choose not to use.

Personally with your components, I'd suggest keeping your LE85s buy a pair of round tractrix horns and use your 2405s. I think that would be a superior system.
