Begin here: http://www.lansingheritage.org/html/jbl/reference/technical/1983-subs.htm. Smaller 15" B380 version is described near the end....

An even smaller version patterned after the Citation 7.5 can also be built using LE14 driver. LE14A's can still be reconed to LE14H-1, if required.

The common feature among all of these is they utilize "extended bass" drivers with foam cone surrounds.

Two is better'n one. :D

Preamp has little to do with it, unless it has subwoofer output. If not, you'll need a separate crossover in addition to an amp to run the sub(s).

Edit: Giskard just posted about the Citation 5.4, still smaller, but that's a 12" driver:

Much depends on how much room you have for the enclosure. Room placement affects bass distribution greatly so youmay want to experiment with another speaker in different places to see what works and then cement your plans a bit.

As to drivers, stick with the low Qts, low FS drivers for the simple reason you will have smaller cabinets. SOme of these JBL drivers need 6 ft enclosures,
