Hi

In a thread posted for a year back or so, there was a short sentence where the author described a loudspeaker system which was built together with a converted 2440/41 or 375 acting as a "dome-tweeter" (a "back-wards" compession driver). Is it realy possible to do it ?

I couldnīt find the thread again and a search gave nothing. Is there anybody at this forum knowing anything about it ? Whatīs the advatage/drawbacks to convert a compression driver ( eg. a 2440) to a dome tweeter.

I can see an advatage here to do it: I would nearly get all the speakers in a line, and an easier way to mount the driver (2440) in the big enclosure (it wonīt take as much volume in the bass enclosure as with a compression driver bolted to a horn (like the 2380).

I also understand that efficiency will go down a lot compared to the originals.

Maybe I shall convert my old 2440 together with new Ti diaphr. ? I have a lathe and could easely make some sort of a "frame or basket" to bolt to the driver and to a front panel.

I would appreciate to to get a tip here, maybe somebody have knowledge to describe how to do it. Has anybody listen to this "driver", what was the impression, and the type of "sound" produced by the dome ?

"Or..... am I totaly foooolish to think of it".

I tried this briefly 25 years ago with a pair of LE85s. I liked the sound quite a bit, but decided that it was silly to pay for a machined phase plug etc. for a simple dome radiator. You will need to deal with the rear waves coming out of the "front" of the driver. I would suggest you let it play into a volume with fiberglass fill.

I would suggest you give it a shot. It will play about a loudly as any other dome radiator. You will loose efficiency and the distortion will increase, but with caution it should be fine. Let us know how it turns out.

Here's the post (at least the one I'm aware of on the subject):

I figure Ian can point you to the article. Please keep us posted!

4" dome - reversed 2446 without phase plug and rear cover.
working above 400 hz to xxxx
I don't heard this. There are a few similar system somewere in Moscaw, including with vitavox s2.. short (4" throat) tractrix horn, 2xx Hz cutoff. no measurements, no tweeter info.
people said - sound is good http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif (no chamber\phase plug effects)
sensitivity surely less.
