Looks like Harman’s packaging engineers are still coming up short.

Luckily that beast is built like a tank, so I’m sure it survived. Looking forward to your review.

I realize not everyone has suffered from the decades-long Sit-and-Sleep advert/commercial barrage...
but “You’re killing me Barry!” :D

A pair of 5628's. Like you said...Someone had to do it :D.

Anyway this is your thread so if anyone wants to know anything else about them I'll start a fresh one.

Wow! Those should blow you right out of the water!!

Very cool and I for one would love to hear about them. The box looks to be the same size as the 4719’s that I have. I tend to like the tuning of the theater subs so I bet I would love those!

As for me I have been out of town on weekends and juggling a construction project at home that has displaced a ton of stuff both inside and out so the SUB18 remains in it’s box at the shop. :( I hope this wraps up by months end so I can get back to normal in November.

No stairs Rob.

I’m dying to try this thing!!

Barry.

The 5628s are quite the fun speaker! Not too many cinemas use them due to their cost and inefficiency (compare them to the 4642A, for instance, and you need to apply 5dB more power for equivalent SPL in the passband). But you can always tell when they are in use...you'd swear that the theatre had "butt-kickers" in addition to subwoofers as the seats will vibrate. They are pretty awesome.

Cinemas with the Onyx screen will have 5628 as they are part of the the Onyx system specification. We are starting to use them in our Dolby Atmos rooms now too.

Finally! Merry Christmas to me, and the neighbors.

This SUB18 is a monsta!

I am trying it with my 4365’s and driving it with a bridged I-TECH5000HD.

Today I could not find the tunings for the SUB18 on the M2 page so tonight I am winging it.

Tomorrow I will dig in and get it dialed. Fun fun fun!

Barry.

I don't believe I've ever seen SUB18 tunings but if they exist they are going to be pretty basic (e.g. HPF). I suspect room nodes are going to be the biggest contributor to it. JBL does claim that there are tunings for the M2 with the SUB18. I just haven't seen them.

It's been a little while, but I think the Sub18 tuning shows up when you apply M2 with sub within Audio Architect. I don't recall it having a separate tuning file. (...or a separate drop down)

I found it for sure once. The download for a SUB18 on a bridged I-TECH 5000HD. I don’t recall exactly where for sure. I should have put it on a thumb drive then, but I didn’t have a SUB18 at the time so I didn’t

I am going to jump back in tomorrow morning. I will look in Audio Architect but I don’t think that’s where I found it originally.

Thanks guys.
Barry.

Crown sent me the file about two years ago when I called them, I will find it on my computer report back if no one comes across it. I won’t have time till later on this week. It was specifically for the M2 and locked unfortunately.

Thanks,
Scott

Found them, they are too large to attach in a post. I have the files for the I-Tech 3500 and 5000, not sure what the difference is. If anyone still wants them please PM me with your e-mail and I will sent them over.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott;

Thank you for the files. We are smashed at work so it’s late nights but I should get it loaded over the weekend.

For now it is right next to one of the 4365’s with a 6dB low pass at 51Hz. This would identify itself if it was somewhere remote in the room but as is without trying it has -23 degrees phase difference at 50Hz and only -58 degrees difference at 200Hz so the summation is really good.

I like this thing. Gonna have to buy another.

Barry.

No problem Barry, you sub 18 owners really have me looking into the 2269’s.

Also I have not found a tech manual for the sub 18 yet, I will be calling them up to see if one exists.

Thanks,
Scott

Do you guys know the port tuning of the Sub18 enclosure?
I think at it would be around 22 - 25Hz?

I just ran impedance at 8V driven by the I-TECH with a VI box and impedance peak is 26.7Hz.

The ports are 12.75-13.” Long. The port radius is about 0.75”. It’s not exactly a radius as it has a bit of taper headed into the pipe. Pipe diameter is 5” and of course there are two.

It appears the whole box is made from 18MM or 0.75 material. I have’t pulled the driver out but since it is flush mounted in the baffle it has to be thicker.

I was looking at the 5628 speaker tunings files and they have an assortment of file settings for the DSI, DCI, and iTech series amplifiers available for download. I don't have confirmation but it appears to me that each woofer in the 5628 has it's own push terminal. If the 5628 has the same port tuning as the SUB18, then maybe the above mentioned files could be used on a single or pair of SUB18's. This could be a longshot on port tuning but it may get an individual in the same ballpark with the iTech specific files I spoke about last week with the amps listed above. Sorry if it was too off topic.

Thanks,
Scott

For those interested in 5628 (or 2269), here’s a killer deal: https://www.fullcompass.com/prod/566593-jbl-5628-very-high-power-dual-18-cinema-subwoofer

Have you guys measured your subs yet?
I own both SUB18 and 5628 and common for them (even without any HPF) they roll-off VERY steep around 22hz. Like the driver has a built in filter which cuts things off below that frequency.

I have found accurate measurements of very low frequencies in real rooms is very difficult.

Have you tried measuring your subs in different rooms?

Measured in to different rooms. I have never had issues measuring the low frequencies in rooms.

My previous subs were the S1S-EX and 4645C. They did not roll-off this early actually. This surprised me.

hey Barry,
It has been a while since you last posted. I am an M2 and 2x SUB18 owner as well. I’m trying to eliminate the fan noise in my DCi 4|1250n amps. Do you have your amps in a separate room?
Thanks
Paul

Hello Paul!

The I-TECH’s are currently out in the garage, driving a Danley system.

I have been meaning to build a rack with a fairly simple labyrinth in the rear for air entry and exit lined with 1” Owens Corning 703 to hopefully keep the noise down. That project is getting close to the top
of the list as I have completed several projects recently.

I think I was supposed to send you a sketch of what I was thinking about. I still can if you would like.

I am going to jump over to you M2 BSS thread.

All my best.
Barry.

Heads up...the price of the 2269H as a service part was recently reduced in price (significantly) so anyone thinking of doing a SUB18 clone or their own creation(s), it is probably worth getting a requote from their favorite JBL supplier.

Hi,

can someone share the EQing and filters of the Sub18 with me, please?
Where do I get the 2269H for a good price?

Cheers,

Andreas
