If you just pick the correct two terminals on an 8ohm L-pad, you'll have a variable resistor (low ohms to ~40ohms)

Yes, but it'll work the other way round (0 ohms when fully CCW, 40 ohms or even off when fully CW).

In this thread (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?41507-Modifying-a-L-pad-for-rheostat)I've shown how to modify a L-pad to work properly as a rheostat.

Best regards!

Thanks Grumpy, leads 1 and 2 on L pad = 40 ohms fully clockwise 22 ohms at the 12 oclock position and 0 ohms fully counter clockwise , again thanks
