Found. them in a Thriftstore.
These are in the white looking cabinets with the cane type grilles.

That's a natural fit!

That ( custom ? ) finish on those Malibu's beautifully fits the decor of your room.

Yes, but it does not match the couches and loveseat, but no big deal! I can always get new furniture.

Very nice find, and since it was a thrift I am sure you did quite well.

Great find. The 843 Malibu was my favorite of the old time Altecs. Are all the components from the 843?

Not sure Ed
I am very seriously thinking about bi amping these speakers. The crossovers have certainly seen better days, from age alone. I guess I could have new crossovers built for them, but I already have a little 2 way electronic crossover, and guess what ? It just happens to be a 12 db per octave one too.

Hi Malibu, As I'm sure you know, the 843 Malibu was the acoustic twin of the 9844 monitor. 800 Hz 2nd order (12dB slope butterworth.). There are two things I'd do if they were mine: update the crossover if you decide not to bi-amp, and insert the Altec 30904 attenuator/eq between the crossover and the HF driver, especially if you listen to classical music. The depth of field with that speaker is really remarkable, especially with MS type or Decca 3 channel mic techniques.

I've often thought of building an updated version of that speaker using JBL 2214's and either a 2370/2426 or 2380/2426 and using a 3110a crossover. WAF oh about maybe 4 of 10.

Happy listening

How can you update the crossovers, when they are potted ?

Hi Malbu, as you know, the crossovers Altec used were quite basic: 2nd order Butterworth @ 800 Hz. Most of the component cross overs can be taken apart. You could either build your own, it's not too difficult, or probably buy one pre-made from Parts Express. You can talk to them on their help
line and they can help you. Most of the 843s were 16 Ohm I think. Could you tell us what components are in the box? They look like they were custom made, but you should be able to remove the back. Most of them were screwed on. Pics would help. Great find

Once I get them apart, I will take some pics.
