XPL 140 Tweeter and Mid Dead

Hi JBL Fans!

I'm looking at a pair of XPL 140's, but the owner said the tweeter and midrange just died in one speaker. Both speakers were working fine and he said he doesn't know what happened.

He is an older guy that I don't think cranks his music. Does anyone have an idea what might be going on here?

Wiring would be a good guess, something on the XO, etc.

Could he be missing the straps that connect the two sets of binding posts together on the back panel and only wiring to the bottom set? I had a speaker with an intermittent tweeter that ended up being loose binding posts that were letting the strap loose connection when the speaker vibrated, so make sure they're there, and everything is securely tightened.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the input.

It looks like someone bought them. I remember seeing the jumpers being installed in his pictures, but didn't think about the possibility of one side coming loose. That would've been an easy fix.

With those speakers having the Ti domes, I really didn't want to mess with them without getting more info. I know I probably could've recouped my money with the drivers, but I would've hated doing that. Hopefully they went to a good home.

These midranges tend to fail where the voice coil wire attaches to the terminal post. Flexing breaks the wire. I have also seen a couple that were bad due to the solder mixing with the glue at the base of the same terminal. It takes an expert at soldering under a microscope, but all can be repaired.
