Hi there,

first time posting here :)

I'm in the process of restoring an old pair of Altec 3182 with damaged foams.

I tried contacting the usual suspects without any luck, it seems quite difficult to get new foam for these babies.

any good recommendation is most welcome..

thanks!
regards

Hi Vale,

Welcome to Lansing Heritage!

I had a quick look around my usual three places: The Speaker Exchange (reconingspeakers.com), simplyspeakers.com and midwestspeakerrepair.com

No luck, I didn't see any refoam kit for the Altec 3182, nor any recone kits for that matter (seen one aftermarket recone kit on Speaker Exchange for the 3184 which has cloth edge not foam edge as 3182).

I guess you will have to inquire to Great Plains Audio (greatplainsaudio.com) who specializes in vintage Altec products.

Or dig more extensively on the Net, which I don't have time to do now. You may want to try Rick Cobb who sells on E-bay, loneytunes2001, if I remember correctly. Regards,

Richard

Hi Vale,

An important note I forgot to mention. DON'T REMOVE/SCRAP the old foams yet. You may well need to measure their dimensions precisely to find acceptable generic type 18" foams for the driver, in case this is your last feasible option (e.g. if others are too costly).

You will need to measure correctly inside/outside foam diameters, width of the roll, etc., determine if they are angle or flat attach, as well as glued on the front or back of the cone. From the poor picture I have of the 3182 driver the foam SEEMS to be glued on the front of cone, which is usually an easier job to do when refoaming. Regards,

Richard

Hi Richard,

thanks for the warm welcome :)

that's a great deal of useful information you sent me, thanks again.

unfortunately, GPA is not stocking any 3182 parts.

I'll keep searching..
