Can anyone shed any light on the sonic differences/advantages etc between these 2 drivers in particular if this 2216 itch of mine is worth scratching as a drop in replacement in my 9800 type(150L/28hz boxes under H9800 horn)?
Easy question ;-)

Hmm I half anticipated this response ;-)

Soooooo........if some 2216's crop up for sale in Europe I may pull the trigger but for now I think I'll stick with the ME150's.

I was willing to add some conjecture to the conversation / but then I thought better of it .

( I own ME150H woofs but I don't have any 2216's ).

Not sure how much this helps, but the 2216ND in the M2 with the appropriate digital processing is some of the best bass I’ve heard. I’ve never heard the ME150H, but I’ve heard most of JBL’s better woofers, both in DIY and factory applications.

I have heard my friend M2 clone speaker and it did sound good
but we did try my 1501Al-1 and 476Be instead of the original parts and believe me this parts are in another league than 2216Nd and D2430K

Hi Cooky

I recall your project was very impressive

I have not done a subjective comparison but one feature of the 2216nd is the low coefficient wire in the voice coil.

Somewhere l read that feature enables the 2216 to “kick” harder.

The way the gap and the suspension is set up suggests the 2216nd can operate far above its weight at the extremes of cone travel.

Depending on how you use your system that may be a benefit.

The 2216nd-1 is still available as replacement part.

When l get around to it (after equalisation) l plan to compare the 2235H with the 2216nd

the bass from 1501Al-1 were more focused and accurate
but I am not talking down the 2216Nd woofer or 2216Nd-1 that I think is tiny better woofer than 2216Nd, it is a great drivers that cost more than three time less than the Alnico woofers and are better than all of the Ferrite woofers in a two way system

there were much different between the D2430K and 476Be. 476Be sound so much better in every way!
and even his 2450Sl/Be (Truextent) sound better than D2430K
you don´t get the clean natural and warm sound from D2430K that the 4" dome compression can make

There is a big price difference though.

Thanks everyone, this is all very helpful and enlightening, I stupidly missed the boat with the original 'woofers to have'-the 1500al's when I first embarked on the '9800' project.
The ME150 certainly delivers and isn't found wanting in deep LF in the way I use them but that extra headroom Ian alluded to at long excursion for the 2216 does open up options, its actually the low mid 400-800hz range that's intriguing-i hear the 2216 is a rather excellent low midrange driver.....

Hi Ari,

Many thanks for the explanations.
You have JBL jewels such as 1501AL-1 and 476Be.
