Saving a pair of 4435s

Well, this is my first post here, and I'm happy too say, after much hunting, Ive managed to find a pair of 4435s.

At first glance, and with out pulling the drivers out and testing them, it looks and feels like I may only need to replace the foam surrounds.

The cabinets are in excellent shape, and I am very surprised, considering their age, that their not beat up, at all.

I plan to keep everything original JBl gear, and at this point I am wondering if and where I can find, proper original JBl parts I may need, as I go along.

I'm not interested in anything made by an after market manufacturer.

I'm out west in Vancouver Canada, so anything local here would be great, but I'm more then happy too buy bits out of the USA.

This is a great forum.. and there's some very knowledgeable people here..

There is no such thing as an "original" JBL surround material outside of a complete re-cone kit which, if available, are only sold to JBL authorized installers.

That being said, many suppliers and pro-installers offer surrounds that perfectly replicate the originals. Rick Cobb is the one I have used successfully on several JBLs and other speakers and I would certainly recommend his kits.

I'm an old school F.O.H mixer and some times on stage monitor mixer, I've changed a few cones and diaphragms over the years.....

So I'm going to try too do as much as possible myself.

As has been said, JBL doesn’t sell new surrounds except built onto new cones.

I started a thread on “Butyl Rubber Surrounds from Japan” here a couple of years ago where I replaced the surrounds on my 4435’s with the material type that JBL is using now and I am delighted with them. I will see if I can link that thread to this reply.

Please share as you go. For some reason we love to see this stuff. :)

no problem. That was just too see if they would fit on the skid.

The picture of them packed in the crate was the final shipping set up.
The company that packed them did an excellent job.

Well, I pulled the 2234H drivers out today, to confirm what they are, and lo and behold they are the right animal, so I have 4 2234-H drivers, they all came in between, 6.4 and 7 on the ohm meter, and looks too be all original. So far it looks like all I will need to do is a re-foam and their back in action, I ordered some foam kits from Rick, (thanks for the contact) they should be up here in Canada in a week or so. The cabinets have the horn supports built in, the crossovers are all there, and the two 2234s are separated by wood down the middle. Tomorrow I will pull the horns out and see what drivers are there, I forgot to bring allen keys for the bolts.

I'm amazed that no ones messed with these 30+ year old speakers... shocked actually.

Well, time for an update.
refoam all done, system up and humming :):):applaud:

well the 4435 is a very, very nice sounding studio monitor.

My system at this point is 2 mirrored 4435s, a bryston 8bst running only channel 1 and 2, left and right.

I use a Klark teknik DN442 as a preamp, with its two channels of parametric eq if needed, but I’m finding I really don’t need much eq, except to my own taste or to tune the system to a particular album.

And a sony CD player.

Waiting in in the wings to eventually try, is a BSS FDS 366 omnidrive compact plus and a BSS FDS 926 varicurve for tuning and more eq if I want.
The 8b has four channels of 120 watts each, so it could be used to byamp the system with the omnidrive running it, or the 8B can be bridged into 400 Watts a side which is ideal with the internal crossover, or for running the bottom end and using the external crossover and a different amp to run the horns. Perhaps a tube amp, I understand they sound really soft on these horns.

I also found a pair of 4430s and couldn’t pass them up, but after comparing the 4430, the 4435 is a whole step above in overall sound quality.
I could also use the omnidrive and set up a surround system with the 4435s up front and the 4430s for rears and the 8B could power it all.....

I found the exact same, the 4430’s do sound pretty good until you get them in the same room with the 4435’s. I gave my daughter the 4430’s. :)

Not for the faint hearted.

Removing the old gaskets, the old surround, the dust cap and centring with shims and gluing a new surround and dust cap. That’s surgery l prefer to put in the hands of an experienced tech. If they stuff it up it’s their problem!

Btw you have one of the best Jbl monitors and most successful in terms of production tenure. Enjoy 😉
