View Full Version : Will there be sonic difference between a 8 and a 16Ohm diaphragm.

I red once there will be a sonic difference between a 16 and 8Ohm diaphragm in a 2446, so far have only used 16ohm, but I can buy a set of 2450Sl diaphragm's and they are 8 Ohm, so I was wondering if its true or a ghost story.

My experience is they sound and measure just the same.

My experience is based on using solid state power supplies. I don’t know how and if tube amps respond differently.

Barry.

... assuming you are not using the same passive network (e.g., either crossing over electronically or using passive networks with some level adjustments and designed for each impedance).

Hi Mr.Widget,

Not to mention that SL diaphragm is not 'ribbed', on the contrary 2446 diaphragm is ribbed type. And some kind of differences exist between ribbed and non-ribbed (2445) type too.

Some of my measurements have shovn that ribbed type is less prone to break-up up to about over 12kHz, but over that its 'oscillation' is very pronounced, while 2445 has shown a kind of breakup near 10kHz, but its 'oscillation' is less pronounced.

One would think I would have learned to be thorough by now.

I did mean diaphragms that are of identical materials and construction save the impedance of the voice coil in my experience sound identical when power level matched.

As an example D8R475 vs D16R475.

My best,
Barry.

I knew you meant that... but thought others may not. ;)

I expected them to sound the same, have D16R2451SL in them now but those are no longer available, so was wondering if the D8R2450SL should be a perfect replacement, I run them active, no passive filter there, but just wanted to be sure, thanks for the replies.
