Does anyone know what this is / why its on my woofer? It looks like a black gooey substance on my 416b. Thanks. 78547

What is; "this" , that you refer you ?

FWIW, I see a ( circular ) shiny-black glue-line on a dimpled paper cone ( the glue is typically made by Moyen ) holding a ( felted ? ) dust-cap in place .

Is there anything else in your picture needing clarification ? ( fwiw, I also see a nice piece of mesh acting as a vent in that dust-cap ).

Possibly referring to the spot on the pole piece?

Barry.

Another guess... not actually in pic... surround aeroflex type "goop" ... the usual puzzling suspect.

Hi yes I was referring to the pole piece. It looks like maybe a repair or something.

Altec 416's ( sporting an alnico magnetic assembly ) have a bolt holding the central top-plate in position .

That bolt is casually gooped up with some epoxy glue to prevent it from loosening up .

Perhaps that's what you are trying to point us to.

:)

PS; A new picture that focuses past the mesh ( of the dust-cap ) onto the area where the item of your interest resides, would be most helpful.

Welcome to the board, Lee!

You're going to find some certified Altec gurus here who are ready and willing to help out.

What kind of enclosures do those 416s live in?

Hey thanks for the welcome. I can't really get a closer shot of them because of a mesh screen that is infront of the woofer that is a part of the cabinet. (they are housed in custom cabinets with a bass scoop). I was only curious because i don't see that substance on the other woofer.

I'll bet Earl nailed what you are asking about. Don't worry about it.
