I have a pair of 1202B speakers that sound like crap. Everything inside looks good but the horns don't produce any sound. I believe that the crossover is the problem but I can't find any information on how to test them.

Hi Devin,

Disconnect one Horn/Driver from the network ( after taking a SAFETY PIC of the color-coding of the connecting wires ).

Then check that driver for continuity with a multi-meter ( since it's much more likely the drivers diaphragms (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Altec-604-802-804-806-807-808-902-908-909-8-Ohm-Replacement-diaphragm-NEW-GPA-/332328000059?hash=item4d604ada3b:g:174AAOxyFH1RjAv A) need replacing / & those are obtainable from GPA (https://greatplainsaudio.com/) ) .

( Just in case you don't ) I hope you realize the 1202b is a voice-support only, PA box ( ie; there's nothing remotely HiFi about it & it's components ).

If you want a HiFi conversion path then you might ask GPA if the woofers can be reconed into 416's .

You would also need to buy ( for HiFi use ) GPA's 902-8a drivers and then some N1201-8a networks (https://www.google.ca/search?q=N1201-8a+network&rlz=1C1CHBF_enCA703CA703&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiFxe6w1czWAhVSImMKHejhD4cQ_AUIDSgE&biw=1264&bih=682) .

Larger boxes ( for HiFi use ) would be needed if those 1202's are smaller than 7.5 cu' ( internal volume ) .

Thanks I will check them out and let you know what I find. I am wanting to use them for my home theater system.
I also have a pair of 1204s in my garage that sound great how should these compare?

Okay got the meter out and checked them out. The main driver seems to be okay but the horn has no continuity. It has 807-8A horn should I change those to the 902-8A coils?

As per my first post for HiFi use, everything in the 1202 needs changing out ( including that 807 driver, it nneds to be exchanged for the GPA 902-8a ).

The 1204 having a bigger HF driver ( to start with ) just needs a newer GPA-made 34637 diaphragm put into it // all other directions from my first post are applicable ( ie; buy or build a better network & get a 416 woofer for each box ).

OK I dug in deeper the speaker I hadn't opened the horn was disconnected. It works fine now. The other had the crossover wired wrong and has no output to the HF. Now.
Not sure if the cap or the transformer has been damaged.

I believe that I narrowed it down to the capacitor. When I bypassed it I got sound from the horn. It is a 3uf 50 volt I found a 3.3uf 250 volt bipolar cap would that be a suitable replacement?

You bet. Bipolar electrolytics are not the best sonically, but that should get you going.

If I knew you were going to order it, I would have suggested you order (3) 1uF mylar or polypropylene caps wired in parallel. I assumed the 3.3uF electrolytic cap was something you had lying around.

In any case, it'll play.
